Okay so I'm just going to throw my cents in.
Nice review on the Grados. I am a firm believer that the Grados are the best bang for your buck under $100 bar none minus the Portapros. I have the SR225i myself and they are my favorite headphones that I own. They sound great for alternative and indie rock, the instruments and vocals come alive in every song that I play and a joy to listen to.
There a couple of great thing about Grados:
- Sound to price ratio
- Affordability
- Modability - wood cups, cable upgrades, driver mods, etc
- Openess - leads to just the right amount of bass, unless you are a basshead
- Drivability - all the prestige models sound great out of a portable device without the need for an amp
- Uniqueness/Retro design
Things I didn't like about Grados:
- Build quality - not built great compared to others in the price range but sound is Grado's main focus
- Portability - not really portable as they are open headphones and leak sound inside and out
I actually plan to get a couple of wooden cups for my SR225i and get the Alessandro MS1i to do the MS1000 mod with spacers and the G-cush pads.
Currently rocking some Sennheiser HD650s with a NuForce Icon DAC
Does anyone own a pair of AKG K702s?
I own a pair of Q701 which I heard sound similar to the K702. I enjoy the Q701 for the great soundstage but still don't have an amp to properly enjoy them and the Q701 is bass light for me. But I am holding off on doing the bass mod until I get a proper amp like the Schiit Magni/Modi Stack. From what I read the HD600 and the Q701 sounded similar to each other but I have not heard the HD600 yet. Don't know about the HD650 in comparison to the Q701.
