Grunge bands became popular and record labels aren’t the most creative so they went looking for anything that looked and sounded like Soundgarden/Pearl Jam etc. That was the look/scene at the time in Seattle so ar’s singed everything up. Similar thing happened with hair metal in LA during the 80’s and the legendary nyc indie scene in the 00’s.
