NT Book Club Vol. WDYRTD

Just got started on this

Edit: One common theme I've picked up on after reading all these self help books in the past week is the importance of mindset and positivity. I've always been a pessimist and a naturally negative person, but these books have really given me much needed perspective on how important mindset and belief is. Going to start doing some meditation to strengthen my mind and control and change my way of thinking.

Continued A Game of Thrones when I was on a road trip to San Diego. Pacing myself I want to finish all 5 before Winds of Winter comes out next year (hopefully).

Tbh I already had the same mentality as the author currently at age 24. Still a great read nonetheless and a constant reminder to not get complacent

Summary:

This generation places so much emphasis on "Exploring ourselves", "experimenting until we find something we love" etc. College grads in their 20s have no idea what they want to do, so a lot of them work a dead end job hoping one day they'll experience some type of epiphany and decide what they really want to pursue. A lot of people in their 20s have the idea that your 20s are for trying many things and never to settle on something you dislike. That's when you see those people who quit a few months into their jobs because they dislike it.

This book basically details how the decisions we make in our 20s can greatly influence how our future pans out. An example would be someone who doesn't know what career path they want to choose, works at Starbucks while thinking about all the possible options they have in their spare time. In real time, they've achieved absolutely nothing while pondering their choices. They could have better spent their time working somewhere or in an industry they have a mild interest (Eg advertising) in which gives them the opportunity for growth. Sure, they may not like it but it at least gives them the chance to help their career (eg experience in dealing with advertising clients/customers etc) and at the same time explore. The best case scenario obviously is that they took the risk and find out they love their new job.

There's also a chapter on Love, the author details how a lot of people feel like they shouldn't settle too soon and give up on someone great for that sole reason. Before you know it, they hit their 30s and they still haven't found a "suitor" but they will settle for any mediocre person who shows interest because they feel as if their time has run out.

My own take own this issue: So often we ignore little minor flaws in our partner we are unable to see their greatest strengths. Those little flaws amount to nothing in the grand scheme of the relationship, but the inability to accept and embrace those flaws often end a relationship.

The biggest thing I got out of this book is self-awareness and perspective can get you a long long way.

Having just finished school I have a ton of free time on my hands. I am trying to read as many books as I can this summer. What are some of your guys' "must reads"? Currently, I am reading the new Aziz book "Modern Romance" and loving it so far.

Been going through some troubling times lately and reading is the best therapy

I am currently reading this book and would also highly recommend it. It has given me a better perspective on thinking and life and am certain that the teachings can resonate within anyone that reads it.

I battle this stuff everyday and the example you gave in your summary fits myself pretty well. Definitely not complacent with life, but constantly fighting the fears of "what if" so I'll check this out.

Already read a lot of mental game material, but I'll consider this. Gonna have to push it on my girlfriend cause she battles anxiety every day. Just have to convince her to read it.

Familiar with the first and always been a Buffett fan so these are up soon. Great recommendations sir.

Some recommendations:

Short reads. Can all be read in an hour or hour and a half. Straight to the point, no BS filler or self-help mind tricks. Stuff you can grasp and apply today. Short chapters focusing on specific issues and ideas. I recommend downloading them on kindle for the best value. No more than $3 a piece. Been following this guy on Youtube for years. He's a pro ball player but he makes a lot of motivational and philosophy videos. Even listening to basketball related topic videos you can get a lot out of him just by how he speaks. Highly recommended.

finished the first book of the wayward pines trilogy...decent book just dont know if i care to read the other 2

Just ordered the girl on the train

recently finished

Black Wall Street

The Assassination of Fred Hampton

The Bone Tree
