Besides getting the ball to start 2nd half - there supposed to be an advantage there?

Only thing I see is if you work it out that you score at the end of 2nd with no chance for other team AND you score to start the 2nd half. But you could score at the end of the half and still take the opening drive

Only other benefit is in windy games if you defer you get to chose which end of the field you want the ball in
