Over its more than 20 years on the air, MTV's "The Real World" has strayed from its social-experimental roots of bringing together young adults from different walks of life and shedding light on social issues important to youth culture. Recent seasons have instead focused on a cast of uncommonly good-looking 20-somethings binge drinking, fighting, and hooking up. But every so often, viewers get a peek at what the groundbreaking series was once all about.
In this exclusive sneak peek at Wednesday night's episode, "New Chick, Little D---," new girl Nia Moore, 23, (she replaced Joi Niemeyer) opens up to Marlon Williams, 25, about her alleged sexual assault at age 18. "Hurricane Nia," as she's called, recalls in great detail her horrific experience of going on a date with a man who'd been heavily pursuing her. "We hung out twice; the first time, I realized he was really obsessed with me," says the Howard University magna cum laude graduate.
Despite his intense behavior, she trusted him enough to go out with him again. After two beers, she passed out. When she became lucid, she was being sexually assaulted: "It was the most God-awful, disgusting feeling." She went on to share her fear that her life was in danger. The case did go to trial, but he was not convicted. "He still got off. He has the money," Nia said.
To hear more of Nia's story and learn how this experience changed her, tune in to "The Real World: Portland" on Wednesday, 4/17 at 10 PM on MTV.
