Cliffs:
- In Lubang Island in the Philippines fighting in 1945 towards the end of the war
- Ordered by commanding officer to take to the woods and wage guerrilla warfare, and not to surrender or take his own life under any circumstances
- War ends; him and couple other soldiers keep fighting.  for a period of time afterwards aircraft fly over and drop letters and pictures of family members saying that the war is over, but they ignore them believing them to be propoganda to lure them out
- Declared dead in 1959, he still carries out guerrilla activities such as burning rice fields leading to more search parties sent looking for him
- 30 years later, in 1974, a travelling college dropout finds and befriends him and relays his story to japan.  His former commanding officer is located and flys down to Lubang and officially relieves him in person
- Killed ~30 Filipinos over the years, receives pardon from the president due to circumstances

True.  It also set the precedent of the US foreign policy of unilateralism and not giving any dambs about meeting other sovereign nations in diplomacy and instead appointing ourselves as the world's "police nation".  Which is why we now have to operate our 150+ bases around the world that aren't helping our current finances too much.
