Not trying to turn this into a thread that will get me banned, but this is a legit question.
In California, I actually have a condition that could get me a card. I know a bunch of people that have them, and I know all the plus and minuses, except it's always unclear whether it can come back to bite me. I'm in college and looking to go to law school after, and really wanna know if having that on my record could ever come back to harm me in any way. If anyone has any info please share...

Sparknotes: if I get a card, could it come back to bite me in the future?

It's a medical reason, some people don't want to take the chance with prescription pills and obviously if you qualify for a card it's that serious.
I don't see why it would.
I know cops with their cards believe it or not.

correct me if i'm wrong but, all medical information is confidential.

True of course, but I have actually been diagnosed with something and prescribed other alternatives in the past. Just thought that might give it more credibility and less chance to hurt me...

you can just basically walk into "certain" doctors offices and everything is signed and ur good to go

you dont need any "specific" medical condition, just need the co-payment and any other fee (usually around $100-200) and you can start

i dont know if it can bite you in the future but your name is on a list somewhere and when clubs get shut down by the Feds ur info is in their systems that they confiscate...so if they really wanted to bust you they could but i think ur safe enough in california

. anyways, i think you dont have to share that kind of information. I dont think its required for anyone to know. If you have to go through a drug test then maybe you should notify that you have permission and have a card. Im not positive though.

You have nothing to worry about.

I have always had sleeping problems and instead of getting addicted to prescription pills I'd much rather smoke a bowl/blunt.

California has something on the ballot come November of this year that will basically legalize marijuana. It should get the votes but you never know.

Not legalized as in you can pick up a pack of joints at a gas station but it will be regulated to people 21+ yrs. old just like alcohol. We'll also be able to carry like an ounce or 2 and be able to grow freely on your property.

Thank God I was born and raised in Cali. Greatest place in the world.

Oh really...

Without laws defending medical marijuana users from employers' drug policies, Casias and a growing number of medical marijuana users are being let go from their jobs, says Keith Stroup on the legal counsel team of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. He said his office, headquartered in Washington, receives about 300 e-mails and phone calls a year from medical marijuana users who have been fired or had job offers rescinded because of a failed drug test.

"Usually they talk about how they have lost their job," Stroup said. "And I tell them there's not a thing they can do about it."

In 2008, the California Supreme Court backed up employers, ruling a private company could fire an Air Force veteran whose doctor prescribed him marijuana for his chronic and disabling back pain. The veteran was hired by a telecommunications company but fired several weeks after he tested positive for marijuana. The landmark case has many medical marijuana users fretting about their employment prospects, legal experts say.

Now, it is true that there is a legalization law up for ballot this fall sometime, but you may want to look into what that means for your future employer if you're graduating soon.

And, if you plan on working with/for the Federal Gov't don't get a card.

Just get it if you want it telling NT is just going to confuse you.

This is the case with most of the topics people post.

man, ive been really wantin to smoke lately...but on this job search, cant risk it.

I work IT for the gov and we get checked hard since we have access to a lot of confidential docs, so they are aware of me having a card.  They wren't sweating it one bit.

Funny thing for my gov branch if you get caught doping they have to try to help you (rehab, counseling, etc) before they fire you

Stay away from private industry if you burning

Well...I have a Doctors Recommendation/Letter....I really thought about getting the card...but then that would mean I would be in a database. I don't wanna be on a list that says that I chief just incase I'm gonna get a new job or somethin...they be checking that I heard...

OP most of these people are ill-informed. Just forget it's marijuana for a second. You have an illness and you are prescribed medicine. Your employee has NO RIGHT to ask you what medication you are prescribed and what illness you have. It is a direct human resources violations. Now if your job requires a drug test then yes you still have to be clean and pass it. But they can not ask you for any information regarding your help.

There was a bill that would even have allowed you to not have to worry about a job drug testing you but Arnold veto'd it 2 years ago.

http://stash.norml.org/ca...na-workplace-rights-bill

But basic answer = no it won't come back to bite you.
