A lot of those old school arcade games didn't have endings. They just went on forever or until the machine actually glitched out.
Rampage may have been on the tail end of that era. Some of those games had the memory for an ending but your reward for playing was the gameplay itself.
High scores did nothing for me.
I much prefer incorporating an ending as a reward in video games. As I suspect most people do since it became the norm.
