Via New Japan Pro News Feed:

Tetsuya Naito recently sat down with Tokyo Sports, and the biggest takeaway from their conversation was his idea that New Japan should consider returning the annual single-elimination tournament to an openweight format.
Naito suggested that, of the 16 heavyweight wrestlers competing in this year's Cup, only 3 or 4 have a real chance of winning. He named himself, SANADA, and then "maybe" Tanahashi or Ibushi.

So, a couple things we should point out. First, there are at least a couple names that Naito failed to mention. Ishii, is a real dark horse in this Cup. He's been stringing together wins on the current Tour Events (which is always a good indicator of who's inline for a title shot). Ishii would make a good challenger for Switchblade, Suzuki or Okada, and oh yeah he beat Naito last year in the US Title tournament.
And there's also Fale, who made the Finals last year, and also beat Naito in last year's G1.
Also, Omega is sitting this year out--he certainly would have been a favorite in this tournament.

But. Naito is still right.

I count 6 wrestlers in this tournament who--no disrespect--I believe have zero chance of winning the cup (YH, Archer, Yano, Chuckie T., Yujiro, and Taichi). I would drop 4 of those in favor of Hiromu, Marty, KUSHIDA, and BUSHI. This would give top Juniors an annual opportunity to show that their division is not weaker or lower-tier. If a Junior won the cup, he could challenge a Heavyweight, or challenge the Junior Heavyweight Champion. Also it could help make the case for certain Juniors who are looking to move up in weight class full time like we've seen recently with Baretta, Taichi, the Bucks, etc.

There are some cans of worms you could argue being opened possibly in doing this. But I can't think of a drawback that would prevent me from making this change to the New Japan Cup if I were in Gedo's shoes. It adds excitement, opportunity, and future booking options.

Right?

As noted, the next step in the Bray Wyatt vs. Matt Hardyfeud looks to be The Ultimate Deletion, a match to be held at The Hardy Compound in North Carolina. WWE aired footage, which was filmed last Tuesday, of Hardy at the compound on last night's RAW and this looks to be similar to the compound matches they did in TNA.

It was believed that this match may air during WrestleMania34 but PWInsider reports that word is the match will likely take place before the big event in New Orleans, not as a part of WrestleMania. On a related note, there has been a lot of speculation on Hardy and Wyatt possibly teaming up to challenge RAW Tag Team Champions The Bar at WrestleMania 34. As noted, word going around RAW was that Cesaro & Sheamus are expected to be challenged by two Superstars that are not a tag team yet..
