Valley to Downtown is easier now with the extension of the gold line and the blue line. The commute has been cut down by like 30minutes from before

I wouldn't live in downtown unless you want to be around the bums and the hipsters which could be an annoying combination.

If I were you I would look for a place around the Figueroa area but dont go lower than MLK blvd cause thats real hood and dont go over vermont and youll be straight. Around those areas you have public safety trying to take care of students so its a lil safer staying within the boundaries I gave. You will drive 10minutes tops into downtown. Drive around youll see what I mean

rent could be fount for a $800-1200. Just depends what your used to

but LA is expensive overall. Im moving out of an apartment by the mount st marrys area but it is in foreclosure so Im not sure how that will work out. Ive noticed a lot of rental units around tho.

this man knows. Don't go lower than MLK. If you can find a spot near the USC/ Mt. St. Marrys campus you'll have more safety, and you'll still be close to downtown (10 mins from Staples Center)

To add: I probably won't have a car for at least a month.

If you're job is in the heart of downtown, you can take the train into DTLA. If you opt for that then you can get an apartment in some the surrounding areas others have suggested.

If you do settle for downtwon just keep in mind that traffic is that much worse (Clippers, Dodgers, Lakers, Kings, LA Live,Concerts, etc.).

Try Culver City, Pasadena, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Tarzana, Long Beach, Mid City.

If you're gonna be working downtown your best bet would be to find a loft downtown. If not you will be in traffic on the way to work and the way out. Lol... Not to mention it will be hell anytime there's a Laker , Dodger , or Kings game as they are all basically located in the Downtown area.

As someone mentioned above you can get a loft downtown for the $1200 range.

OP, try to live outside of LA, it will be cheaper. Yeah there's going to be traffic but its LA, there's traffic everyday, unless school is out. You gotta get used to the traffic ASAP.

you wont have problems finding a place within walking distance of your work in dtla for $1200 a month. i live in dtla almost 1100 sq ft and 2 parking spaces for $1095 and i work in dtla as well. for transportation a dash pass (dtla shuttle) is $18 a month.

OP don't listen to these guys my dude.  Your fresh out of college your going to want to mingle, and living in downtown right next to your job is the best way to party and still save your money.  These guys commute in, and only see downtown from 9-5.  I worked at the Federal Reserve right on 9th and Olive.  My hours would change up, so I would be there anytime from 11pm to 3am to 9am.  That area was crazy after dark when it came to socializing, and there are a few very nice places over there in your range or a $100 or $200 higher.  But you factor in the money you save on commuting and it's a win win.  DO NOT COMMUTE ON THE TRAIN!  These guys aren't telling you that someone might decide to throw themselves in front of the Metro Link, and totally prevent you from making to work at all.  The train is very unpredictable, and you don't need that kind of headache with a new job.  That commute is CRAZY, but interesting. 

And yes you can get it anywhere in Los Angeles ANYWHERE.  These guys just don't know that the crime scenes get wrapped up by the time people start heading to work.  I've been out there in the late night hour, and it's going down.  From Westwood to Santa Monica to Woodland Hills you can get it.  But just keep to yourself, keep your eyes open, and be quick to react.  Really don't buy into the hype tho LA isn't that bad of a place.  I've been places I had no business being in expensive cars and never had any trouble.  The people that get caught up aren't just random victims 9/10 times.  FYI if you don't want your car stolen don't buy a Honda, Acura, or a Escalade, and you'll be good.

I live in Long Beach and take the train to work each day. Not bad at all and your job will probably pay it. I tried to drive once and it took 1.5 hr, never again.

Getting to work will not be a problem, getting around on the wkends would be horrible without a car.

Yeah, it's all depending on your range. If you don't want to live in the middle of the smog you could always choose to live outside the city, like in Pasadena or something. It'll be a commute, but I prefer having more space personally.

Its bad below Gaffey, thats the general rule of thumb. But you dont have to be by the water to be in the "nice" part.

I would live there once I have a family, but not now. Theres absolutely nothing to do.

There's plenty of places that offer that service. Not sure what your yearly salary is but it wouldn't hurt to look into it.

All the porn stars are in the valley. I used to work at a community college and met a porn star (didnt know she was one) who was open about where they work. She said they in van nuys, encino, sherman oaks and all these other places. Last I heard she ended up getting killed by her bf.

Anyways, sherman oaks will be expensive compared to north hollywood. Keep in mind other expenses. I think close to work is your best bet, but some people dont like the city so they move out of it. Like someone else said dtla can get crazy with traffic (usc, dodgers, la live, staples) so that 110 can get bad at times.
