LOCK IT UP - College Football - 2009 Season/2010 Off-Season

a TEXAS vs. LSU series would be tempting. i've often wondered why LSU and TEXAS never put together a gram/p.v. annual type thing. our high schools have figured it out, while our big name colleges are still tip toeing around each other.
Ten freshmen most likely to make an immediate impact in 2010
USC coach Lane Kiffin has said true freshman running back Dillon Baxter is "potentially the most talented player on the team."

Chris Williams/Icon SMI

Afive-star recruit becomes a zero-star the moment he straps on pads andtakes the practice field with his college teammates. In preseason camp,a sterling evaluation from Rivals.com or Scout.com means nothing.

Today,we'll look at 10 freshmen who have lived up to the recruiting hype. These players, many of whom also took part in spring practice, haveimpressed coaches and teammates since their arrivals on theirrespective campuses. When the season begins next week, they'll bepoised to make an immediate impact.
Dillon Baxter, RB, USC
Baxter is suspended for USC's opener against Hawaii. Trojans coach Lane Kiffinhasn't publicly attached a transgression to the punishment, but Baxterstands accused of fabricating a tale about schools trying to contacthim almost immediately after the NCAA sanctions against USC wererevealed (which still doesn't make any sense), and the Los Angeles Timesquoted a source saying Baxter was the student referenced in a USCDepartment of Public Safety report that detailed someone "violating ateam curfew" and "being under the influence of a controlled substance."So while Baxter hasn't had an auspicious first year as a Trojan, he hasmade an impression on the field. When he suspended Baxter, Kiffinacknowledged that the San Diego native is "potentially the mosttalented player on the team." Kiffin is correct about that; when Baxterdoes get on the field, jaws will drop.

Success for Kiffin, Trojans in 2010?
Michael Dyer, RB, Auburn
Dyerdidn't have to do much blocking while ringing up 2,502 rushing yardsand 31 touchdowns as a senior at Little Rock (Ark.) Christian, buthe'll need to pick up Auburn's blocking schemes before offensivecoordinator Gus Malzahn is comfortable using him on a regularbasis. Malzahn has said Dyer already has the chops to carry the ball,so if he learns the less glamorous stuff quickly, he could be a key cogin the Tigers' offense.
Matt Elam, S, Florida
The self-proclaimed LeBron-Bosh-Wade of the gridiron, freshmen defensive linemen Dominique Easley, Ronald Powell and Sharrif Floyd, haven't earned a place in the Gators' regular rotation yet, but Elamhas. The safety -- whose commitment waffling generated headlines on NewYear's Eve and left him with a Palm Beach Post Player of the Year story illustrated by him wearing Florida State gear -- wowed coaches and teammates in the spring. Veterans Will Hill and Ahmad Blackraved about him this summer. When the Gators open against Miami (Ohio),Elam is set to play in nickel situations and back up Black at strongsafety.

McCARTNEY: Florida among teams looking to fill huge voids
Marquis Flowers, S, Arizona
The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Goodyear, Ariz., is already challenging for a starting job. Coach Mike Stoops' decision to move Robert Golden, last year's starting strong safety, to cornerback opposite Trevin Wade has opened up a spot. Even if Flowers doesn't win a starting safety job, he could wind up playing nickel to start the season.
William Gholston, DE, Michigan State
william-gholston-p1.jpg

At 6-foot-7, 260-pounds, William Gholston is too special an athlete to keep off the field.

Courtesy of Michigan State Athletics

The 6-7, 260-pound Gholston spent the first two weeks of Spartans camp playing linebacker, but he asked coach Mark Dantoniothis week if he could return to the position he played at Detroit'sSoutheastern High. Dantonio happily complied. Gholston is too specialan athlete to keep off the field, so it's paramount that he play aposition that feels comfortable for him.
Lamarcus Joyner, CB, Florida State
The Seminoles have two potential superstars at cornerback in redshirt freshman Xavier Rhodes and sophomore Greg Reid, but Joyner is too athletic to keep off the field. He may play in sets that require an extra defensive back. Coach Jimbo Fishersaid Thursday that Joyner will start alongside Reid as a kick returner. If Fisher and his staff are as smart as they appear, they may also findother ways to get Joyner into the game.
Jake Heaps, QB, BYU
Heapsstood a chance to become the first true freshman in BYU history to openthe season as the starting quarterback, but his quest for solepossession of the title fell just short. Coach Bronco Mendenhall has decided Heaps and junior Riley Nelsonwill share the QB job when the season begins next week. Mendenhallcited the different styles Nelson and Heaps bring as a way to keepdefenses guessing, but Heaps may not be splitting snaps for long. OnWednesday he offered a reminder of why he was one the nation's top QBrecruits, lofting a touchdown strike to receiver Rhen Brown on a third-and-23 play.
Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina
The6-foot, 210-pound Lattimore looked like a workhorse back when hestarred for Byrnes High in Duncan, S.C. While he probably isn't readyfor 25 carries a game right away, it shouldn't be long before he is. Ifthe Gamecocks' line can open holes for him, Lattimore can ease thestrain on South Carolina's quarterback (be it Stephen Garcia or Connor Shaw), who will be under enough pressure now that Coach Steve Spurrier has the confidence to yank one signal-caller for the other.
Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma
TheSan Diego native was the breakout star of Oklahoma's spring game, andhe already is listed as a starter on the Sooners' depth chart. WhileOklahoma coach Bob Stoops is expecting a big year from senior tailback DeMarco Murray, that doesn't mean quarterback Landry Jones will stop flinging the ball around. Stills gives Jones another target if veteran Ryan Broyles draws too much of the defense's attention.
Pete Thomas, QB, Colorado State
Unlike Heaps, Thomas has already locked down the starting job. Rams coach Steve Fairchildannounced on Aug. 16 that the 6-5, 220-pound slinger from El Cajon,Calif., would take the first snap when Colorado State opens againstColorado. Thomas was Colorado State's highest ranked recruit in years, and he played like it from Day 1.

Oregon Ducks announce starter.

Sophomore Darron Thomas has been named Oregon’s starting quarterback, beating out fifth-year senior Nate Costa for the job, UO coach Chip Kelly announced this afternoon via Twitter.

The announcement ends months and speculation and answers the biggest question about the Ducks entering a season in which many have predicted them to repeat as Pac-10 champions.

Neither Kelly nor Thomas were available for comment after the announcement.

The 6-foot-3, 212-pound Thomas, a Houston native, played in five games as a true freshman in 2008, completing 16-of-33 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns. All but three completions and 58 passing yards came in a fourth-quarter comeback that fell short in a 37-32 loss to Boise State.

The Ducks open the season at home against New Mexico on Sept. 4, which will be Thomas’ first career start.

Costa was named the starting quarterback in 2008 before he suffered a season-ending knee injury in fall camp, the third major knee injury of his career.

Costa started one game for the Ducks last season, a win at UCLA, completing 9-of-17 passes for 82 yards and one interception.

The NCAA is now looking into the UNC football program on 3 fronts.
Player eligibility, both agent related and academic wrong doing and
ties between agents and members of the UNC staff. What shook everyone
at UNC up last week was the discovery of the academic problem. Caught
everyone by surprise. Don't expect anything out of UNC until the
verdict comes down.

On the agent/UNC staff involvement at least 2 folks have talked quite
candidly with the NCAA but it has been off the record. They refuse to
go on the record about it. The NC SOS could force that issue but
nothing so far. The NCAA is really digging on this issue so stay tuned.

I believe its safe to say a number of UNC players will start the
season sitting out. One holdup on that decision is one player and his
family are adamant he did nothing wrong and are ready for a fight. No
lawyers retained as yet but they are waiting in the wings.

North Carolina's season has been wrecked. No point in any more
speculation as to who goes. it will play out for everyone to see.
There are a few blips as to recruiting but it will be bad enough as is
and I'm not sure how far the NCAA will push things. When the school's
Chancellor goes on TV and apologizes for the football program
embarrassing the University it doesn't get much worse.

From a credible guy involved with UVA's program and VA recruiting circles. Obviously not gospel but he's been right on a number of things so far.

Don't like seeing Gholstons name on that list esp when we have to deal with Greg jones as well.

I want to see what Darrons going to do with that offense. They have a ton of speed....

Brennan Beyer who is coming to Michigan next year scored 3 TDs in 5 minutes. 2 recieving TDs and a blocked punt for a TD. His game is very Craig Roh-esque. Crazy high motor and a terror because of a fast first step.

1 week until the start of College Gameday and a day filled with doing nothing for me. No more weddings for me either. Its almost like a vacation is coming up for me.

 Big Ten Recruiting Breakdown

[th=""]Rank[/th][th=""]School[/th][th=""][/th]

1
Ohio State Buckeyes
Top prospect: DE Steve Miller (Canton, Ohio/McKinley)

The Buckeyes head the Big Ten class rankings and are currently No. 4 in the nation. Ohio State has retained a lot of the state's top talent and flexed its recruiting muscle outside as well. No. 2 overall quarterback Braxton Miller(Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) has a powerful arm and is explosive on the ground with his legs. He's one of the better pure quarterback pickups in recent years. DE Miller and four-star OG Michael Bennett (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) are great in-state commitments up front. Recent receiver commit Evan Spencer (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) is a playmaker and one of the best in the Midwest. The Buckeyes also plucked two talented four-star prospects out of Florida -- safety Jeremy Cash (Plantation, Fla./Plantation) and tight end Jeff Heuerman (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier).
194.gif

2
Northwestern Wildcats
Top prospect: WR Christian Jones (Spring, Texas/Westfield)

The Wildcats made a push for the top 25 in our latest class rankings and are recruiting very well under the energetic Pat Fitzgerald, particularly considering their academic restraints. Jones could be the very first ESPNU 150 prospect signed by the program. His size-to-speed combination is at an upper-tier level. While plucking Jones out of Texas is an impressive feat, the solid depth in this class is just as notable. After Jones, three prospects hover right under the four-star range and are rated in the top 25 at their positions. Offensive tackle Jack Konopka (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) has the large frame and athleticism to develop into a good one.
77.gif

3
Michigan State Spartans
Top prospect: ILB Lawrence Thomas (Detroit/ Renaissance)

The Spartans are currently flirting with landing their first top-25 class in the Mark Dantonio era. They have been putting together a quality class that is almost completely made up of three-star talent. The class features a trio of good prospects at linebacker led by lone four-star prospect Thomas, who might end up fitting better at end, as well as high three-star outside linebacker Darien Harris (Hyattsville, Md./ DeMatha Catholic). The Spartans have also landed a pair of good offensive line prospects led by top-10 center prospect Jack Allen (Hinsdale, Ill./ Central).
127.gif

4
Iowa Hawkeyes
Top prospect: OG Jordan Walsh (Glen Ellyn, Ill./ Glenbard West)

Iowa's class currently sits a little outside the top 25 and while not very flashy it represents a solid effort thus far. The class features only two in-state prospects at this time, but they are both good gets. Austin Blythe(Williamsburg, Iowa/Williamsburg) could develop into a good guard or center for the Hawkeyes and tight end Henry Krieger-Coble (Mount Pleasant, Iowa/Mount Pleasant) is a tough kid who can help Iowa move the chains. Walsh gives Iowa another good guard in this class and tight end Ray Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) gives the Hawkeyes a second good tight end prospect. The Hawkeyes also went to Florida to get a promising quarterback in Jake Rudock (Weston, Fla./Saint Thomas Aquinas).
2294.gif

5
Michigan Wolverines
Top prospect: CB Delonte Hollowell (Detroit/Cass Tech)

The Wolverines still have work to do if they are going to land another top-25 class. While they sit on the outside looking in, it is not a bad collection of talent, but lacks the impact-type prospects that many are used to seeing Michigan get. The Wolverines have a pair of good cornerback prospects committed, led by in-state product Hollowell. The Wolverines also landed an intriguing quarterback prospect in Kevin Sousa (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona), who is a bit raw at this point, but is a physically impressive kid with upside.Brennen Beyer (Canton, Mich./Plymouth), a top-25 defensive end prospect, will likely fit well at outside linebacker in the Wolverines' scheme, much like current starter Craig Roh has.

Wow. Galippo was supposed to be the next big thing. I never saw Devon as a MIKE but he is a freak.
I thought if Tyler could get healthy would be a beast. That kid is a load (no Peter North)

Robert Woods getting the nod over Ambles. What happened to Prater?? He's like 5th/6th on the chart!

&& Yeah I was heated when Michigan went to Adidas & STILL am.

Prater has had nagging injuries throughout camp.  Woods has been killing it out there.

Ambles is backing up RoJo, so Woods didn't necessarilty get the nod over Ambles.  I'm sure Ambles along with Prater, Ausberry, Flournoy and Brice Butler will get some playing time.

DeMetrius Wright was cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse, still waiting on Soma Vainuku.

Patrick Hall, DJ Morgan and Hayes Pulllard possibly reshirting this year

^ Oh Okay thanks for the info. Yeah DJ Morgan would be best fit to RS this season. Along with Hall. Morgan will be able to see the field much often next season with CJ gone & Bradford gone.

Btw, I was playing NCAA 11' last night & got me thinking...It seem Gable been at USC for ages
