OK here goes...
1. Take the people YOU CHOOSE to get in relationships with AS IS. Don't go in trying to change people. You can help better people but you can't help those who don't want it.
2. If someone has a different set of principles than you, its probably best to leave them be or you'll waste so much time arguing. Plus the difference in principles can bring on situations that either one of you want to deal with.
3. ASK as many non intrusive questions as possible when you're getting to know someone. You can almost never ask too many questions to be sure.
4. This is not popular, but hold off on sex. No need to rush into when you're getting to know someone.
5.Trust is very important. If you can't trust someone to have your best interest at heart when making key decisions, don't stay with them.
6. Don't be overbearing but stay in tuned. Trust is important but there is nothing wrong with making sure things check out from time to time.
7. If your spouse says or does questionable things that make you question their character, don't ignore them. Guys, your girl says she likes to be choked. Cut her loose. Girls, your guy says he doesn't feel pretty enough. Head for the hills.
8. Treat each other how you want to be treated.
9. Get rid of pesty people. Nothing ruins life faster than annoying people who want you to go through hell with them.
10. From get go, go over whats cool and not cool. From Ex's to opposite sex friends to crapping with the door open. What's acceptable and whats not. What you flat out expect from one another and what direction you two are going in.
Special bonus rule that I avoided recently... Don't become a Roy, Pam or Jim from the Office.
Edit. Add your own too.
