Marshall inquires with Mike D'Antoni

Marshall has reached out to Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni to gauge his interest in coaching his alma mater, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Thundering Herd have pursued D'Antoni before and made this latest inquiry -- which coincides with his uncertain future in Los Angeles -- because they "always sound him out" any time Marshall has an opening in a bow to D'Antoni's stature in school history.

But sources stressed D'Antoni is highly unlikely to make such a switch even if the Lakers opt for a coaching change at season's end. Although he has served as an unofficial sounding board for school officials in the past, D'Antoni has coached only at the pro level, with three stops in Italy and stints with the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks and Lakers in the NBA.

With the Lakers playing in Milwaukee on Thursday night, D'Antoni could not be immediately reached for comment.

D'Antoni played for the Thundering Herd from 1970 to '73, and was selected in the second round of the 1973 NBA draft. His brother, Dan, also played and coached at the school before serving on Mike's staffs with both the Suns and Lakers.

Marshall is looking to replace Tom Herrion, who was fired after posting a 67-67 mark in four seasons.

The injury-ravaged Lakers entered Thursday's play at 24-46. They went 40-32 last season after D'Antoni replaced Mike Brown early in the 2012-13 campaign, but numerous injuries and in-house tensions during Dwight Howard's lone season as a Laker led to a first-round sweep at the hands of San Antonio.

In a recent appearance on "The Dan Patrick Show," amid speculation that he has been disenchanted with D'Antoni's spread-the-floor approach, Lakers star guard Kobe Bryant said: "I don't know [if D'Antoni should return]. It's been tough on him. The two years he's been here, he's been dealing with so many injuries left and right. He hasn't really gotten a fair shake at it since he's been here."

D'Antoni has two seasons left on his Lakers contract but only next season is guaranteed. When pressed recently about his future, D'Antoni told local reporters: "My job is to finish up as good as we can. Then everybody huddles ... and we'll see what happens."

I don't think D'Antoni would leave, but he would kill at the college level.

Voted for Jerry Sloan, but really wanted Coach K if it weren't at least 5 more years.

Man bucks just need to win but most likely will just lay down in the second half

I mean come on its the lakers. Everyone likes beating the lakers.

The bucks can afford to win too. They have number 1 spot locked up already

I would have loved to see a prime steve nash coached by jerry sloan

Hill and Kaman DNP for 6 weeks, now play more minutes than anyone.

Somebody is mandating those two facts. Just not sure what the goal is.

There should be only 2 wins at most the rest of the season @Cowtown and maybe @Utah. 26-56 should put us right at 4th worst to finish the season.

I'm liking what I see out of this Zach Levine kid, he's got explosiveness; too bad we don't have any other late 1st rders.

D'Antoni preparing to save face and flee for Marshall?

Source on Mike D'Antoni to Marshall: 'There is mutual interest'

Marshall has reached out to Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni about its head coaching vacancy, a source close to D'Antoni confirmed to CBSSports.com on Thursday night.

ESPN.com first reported the interest from Marshall.

But D'Antoni is interested, too, a source said.

"I would think his days are numbered based on Kobe saying he had no interest in playing for him next year," a source told CBSSports.com. "If he isn't with the Lakers, I believe he will be at Marshall because there is mutual interest."

The source added that Marshall has donors willing to pony up money in an attempt to woo D'Antoni.

D'Antoni has been the head coach of the Lakers since the early part of the 2012-13 season, but injuries and chemistry issues have married his time in Los Angeles. He has also been the head coach for the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks.

D'Antoni was asked about the situation following the Lakers' loss to the Bucks Thursday night, presuming to laugh off the questions but also not issuing a flat denial.
"I hear from them all the time," D'Antoni said of his alma mater. "I'm the head of their capital [fundraising] campaign. I'm close friends to them. Whatever they need, I try to do. But ... who knows."

D'Antoni is a West Virginia native and played at Marshall from 1970-73.

The Thundering Herd parted ways with head coach Tom Herrion earlier this month after four seasons. The program last made the NCAA Tournament in 1987.

SVG all the way.

I just worry he might be too much of a lightning rod in LA.

Just checking to be clear, we are pushing for Stan Van Gundy?

We don’t like the way Mike D’Antoni gets along with his star players, or how he talks/acts towards the media, so we are pursuing, Stan……Van Gundy? The man who clashed with Shaq and Dwight and was fired from both spots?

The same coach that was given a 5 year contract at Wisconsin, and fired after just 1 year?

He left Wisconsin, and the very next year his team improved, even tho their best player left to the NBA (Michael Finley) He left Miami, and the very next year, they got better as well?

He’s been out of the league for a few years now, doesn’t get along with his players, and fired at every stop, but he’s our guy.

Welp, I look forward to our coaching search in the 2016 thread fellas. Hopefully you all can find yet another scapegoat, er, coach to blame for our troubles. :lol

I’m excited for all these players to have to learn yet another new system next year and start over, again. Should really help their development as well.

What we really need is Fisher to retire already, and just have him go straight to head coach, ala Jason Kidd. You want a young (for coaching, not for playing) coach who can develop and does know what he’s talking about, as well as someone who played with, and for the best, and is respected, Fisher would be the guy I would ask for, but not for another year or two, when he’s finally done playing. And even then, he’ll have no experience as an actual coach, but hopefully he could develop along with his players. I rather give him a shot than a retread like Stan Van Fired.

What a surprise, CP has something negative to say to the coach that were voting for.

C'mon brah, we already knew you were setting us up for lectures if we didn't vote for MDA :lol

I know that was the whole point of your poll idea. Wait in the rafters and see the names people mention, then type up an essay mocking people and ridiculing folks for the coach they pick.

We get it man. To you MDA is the best available in the world.

Can we have our own opinions without being lectured? Can we vote for someone in the poll without being laughed at? Sheesh. :lol

It's like we all have to be sheep and follow your thoughts and opinions or we're all stupid.
