Ya but back then EJ and Bean were prototypical shooting guards. In today’s game they would definitely be moved around to other positions

Here;s my hot take. I want the Lakers to step out of the shadow of Kobe Bryant. I know he's one of our all-time greats but it's time to move on. For a guy who isn't formally part of the organization he still casts a large shadow over everything we do.

I agree but the moves aren't his fault. He even said in interviews why he hasn't been back to Staples to watch live games was because he doesn't want to take away the spotlight from the young core guys right now.
-Lakers hiring Rob Pelinka as their new GM, Kobe's former agent was made by Jeanie Buss and Magic.
-The decision to retire both 8 & 24 jerseys now was primarily because of Allstar weekend and the 2018 allstar game being played at Staples Center.

He's largely been absent since he retired until this jersey retirement. The way we treat our legends is actually one of the best things about our organization. It makes sense they'd give him the first in the icon series to bank off the nostalgia. I mean they sold out of $400 swingman jerseys.
