Jobless and Frustrated NTers check in VOL. WE NOT-WORKIN!!!

Question: How do you guys handle the question: "What are your future plans?"

Something like that came up in an interview i had last week (I'm a junior accounting major). I told them ideally I would land an internship at one of the big 4 for the summer and that if i get a job out of that, stay for a few years and then move to a smaller company, which is the truth,
Who was the interview with?

Just to be safe, don't ever say that again. People talk & you never know who they know. Keep that plan to yourself if you really wanna do big 4.

Thinking back on it, i think i should've told them i'd stay as long as i could be productive, or at least told them i'd stick around for a few years

Future plans: Answer in a way that says you're going to stay within the company, but you want to MOVE UP within the company.

Don't mention anything about going anywhere else, or make it seem like you might have too much ambition for what the company does.

Basically convince them you're smart enough to do the job better than everybody else applying, but not so smart that you know you should be working somewhere else and getting paid more :lol

Whats going on my fellow NT'ers.

Ive been watching this thread for a little while so I decided to chime in and share a little bit of what I went through during my post- college job search. Graduated from a small NCAA D-2 school in WV Dec 2010 with a double major in Accounting and Finance w/ just missed a 3.0 GPA. (being from Cleveland, OH it was a HUGE TRANSITION). Played bball during my college years so in a sense I had a job during my college career. Missed out on summer internships because of bball and other things going on in my life. (HUGE REGRET that I carry to this day). Worked a few jobs after college but nothing in w/ my degree. Moved back to Cleveland, coached local JUCO bball and AAU during my job search. I went an ENTIRE year applying for positions and getting the dreaded "You have a great resume, background, references BUT you have NO experience" email was terrible.

Fast forward to Nov 2012, my uncle was living in Nashville, TN and he talked me into coming down to stay for little bit. Got on my knees and just prayed everyday to God asking for a job. Next thing I know, I'm in the local library and I saw an ad for a temp agency for an A/R Specialist in the city of Nashville. Got the call within an hour about coming into the Temp agency to interview on a Thursday morning. Got my best suit and got fresh. The interview went great and they forwarded my resume to McKesson Specialty Health.

Interviewed with them on a Friday morning and got offered the position by Friday afternoon to start the following Monday morning. Worked temp to perm from Dec 2012 to May 2013. Interviewed with McKesson as a Jr Credit Underwriter and got hired on late May as a salary employee. Ive been with them ever since. God has truly blessed me in my life and sometimes you have to just humble yourself and take something to prove yourself. Just stay patient and work your butt off then things will fall into place. If anyone needs any help or just a resource I'm willing to help in the Accounting and/or Finance.

Sorry for a long read guys

i haven't applied anywhere in at least 2 months

i get discouraged a lot and i have no faith in landing an entry level career position as a part-timer

Everyone in here is discouraged. Not applying for two months is crazy. You could have gotten at least interview out of that. You need to go to a staffing agency if you haven't already.

applied for a transporter at Hertz, weekend loader at Lowes & a dock worker at YRC Freight tonight just for the hell of it, i have no experience for the freight, and lowes had one of those stupid *** tests, and hertz is just transporting cars from location to location which seemed confusing but that's the one i would like the most cause i enjoy driving

:hat

Even though my degree isn't in accounting, I'm in an accounting positon right now. My respect and understanding for people in the field has grown tenfold, salute!

Anyone ever move for a gig? Finished welding school and have been applying everywhere I can think of.

That led me to apply for positions in Houston. One company down there emailed me today. I'm gonna call tomorrow and if things sound good, I'll decide from there

i haven't had an interview since jan/feb, continued to actively search for jobs after that up til 2 months ago but nothing came up.

i'm with one agency but i never hear anything from them.

Don't settle for one agency. My resume and profile are at multiple agencies and I always follow up weekly to let them know that I'm still looking. Some agencies are completely useless so you have to check in with them so they know that you don't need their services anymore.

i haven't checked up since i went to them to be honest (2 weeks ago). i'm tired of working warehouse though and breaking my back for $8 an hour like i use too, so i think that's the reason i haven't been to more.

Not jobless, but not at my ideal situation.

Just graduated with a degree in Kinesiology this May and got to intern/volunteer at a PT place this month.

Gotta pay my dues and volunteer tons (!)...However, I feel like I need more money and might look for a second job...(I work part time at a restaurant and pays fairly well, ~22/hour after tips).

I'm not textbook smart, so school is tough for me...But I'd need to go to grad school to make it further in the physical therapy world.../vent.

Need to get back on the job hunt. Applied to a vacant position at my current job on Monday but haven't heard anything from them so I assume that I didn't get it. Trying to get a job in the marketing field that doesn't involve any sales. Need some connects here in Houston

start with the above 2, and upload that resume.  have it ready when looking for companies.  don't quit my dude.

Just passed my pre employment test and will be contacted within a few weeks for an interveiw. My brother said to ask some questions so I can look engaged or whatever about getting the job. So my questions is what are some good general questions I can ask to seem engaged?

nowadays how do you follow up on the application which you submit online.

can you even follow up anymore, it's not like applying to Foot Locker where the store manager usually handles the hiring.
I was about to ask this as well. When you guys say follow up one week later what do you mean? I recently physically went to the store and left my resume with them, I also submitted it online like they told me to afterwards. Should I go back one week later to the store to see whatsup if they havent gotten back to me?

What's up bros, I got an offer to be a project engineer at a major company here in D.C. :hat

Keep on fighting and contact all of your connections. That's how I got this position, it's all about who you know.

Also in the interview process, stress how much you can/want to do for the company not how much the company can do for you. Every answer should be from that stand point.

Just out of curiosity where did you graduate from?

Question: I just did a phone interview with a company. I'm a junior in undergrad and this position is for a summer internship. Now the thing is, the internship is at the company's HQ in another state. I didn't ask the person on the phone because i didn't want to act like I'm getting an in person interview, but if they do offer it to me, would flying costs there be covered by the company or do they expect me to pay out of pocket for the flight?

For next summer I'm guessing? Is the company in another state from your school? And how far? They either might have a branch in your area or, if not, will likely offer you some housing and probably transportation but cross that bridge when you get to it.

San Francisco State University.

Now I'm a little depressed :\. The one month program I volunteered at ended today...I loved learning at the facility and only wish I had more time.
I knew it was only a one month gig, so I shouldn't have expected anymore -- But not being able to volunteer a second month seems like I didn't do a good enough job despite them telling me otherwise.

I got another place to volunteer at, but I hate working at a place where I don't really leave an impression -- Not the come and go type of guy.

Graduated from Stevenson University. Visual Communications Design. (Graphic Design)
Chilled until August. Been interning since mid July. Freelance all the time. But work has been slow.
Applied for several entry level jobs, paid internships.
I think I'm talented, ready for an opportunity.
No jobs contacting me back or denying me.
Its kind of discouraging. But of course I'm not giving up.

I just don't want to waste time working retail or something i know I don't want to do. |I

Congrats on graduating! I'm at sf state right now trying to finish up. I want to get into PA but that is a long road ahead of me and just like yourself my weakness is not being booksmart so I know that when I get out of school I won't remember everything I learned. Keep at it and you'll find other volunteer places. Have you looked into volunteering at hospitals even though it may not be in the field you want to be in? Just to get your foot in the door.
