JAPAN has been struck by amagnitude 8.8 earthquake off its northeastern coast, shaking buildingsin Tokyo for several minutes and prompting a tsunami warning.
Japan'smeteorological agency warned that a tsunami as high as 10m could strikethe coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicentre. Smallertsunamis of up to 50cm reached some coastal communities, the agencysaid.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunamiwarning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the NorthernMarianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, thePhilippines, Indonesia and U.S. state of Hawaii.
The quake struckat 2.46pm at a depth of 10km, about 125km off the eastern coast, themeteorological agency said. The area is 380km northeast of Tokyo.
Indowntown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured intothe street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire andbellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.
Footageon national broadcaster NHK from their Sendai office showed employeesstumbling around and books and papers crashing from desks.
Police and coast guard officials said they were assessing possible damage from the quake.
Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude one on Wednesday.
