The more I listen to Cole (song is dope though. even though I doubt I'll listen more than a couple times), I realize something with rappers post-kanye...
...if you're from the suburbs you CANT talk about ANYTHING else besides GIRLS and MONEY.
Thats IT.
MAYBE Weed... Wiz, Currensy, Smoke DZA, etc...
It only reiterates EVERYTHING I've been saying. Drake and Cole are the SAME artist. Its the ONLY thing to connect with audiences. You're not about that life to rap about shooting, murder, and hard drugs so what else do you have experience with? Girls...and Money... Thats it. Its the DELIVERY is what people care about. The Warm Up and So Far Gone were about what? Girls...and Money... But because one fits more lyrics in per/bar and rides out with old school beats, hes automatically better? This is why I put them on the same level.
Props to Cole though, hes the only resemblance of an era where things SOUNDED like they used to. But even Cole fans know its not the same, or they should. Maybe its better for us as a people though...honestly, where has murder music led us or what does it have the potential to do these days? I think this is the period of HONEST music...where when you wake up and you hate your job (because you actually have one), you're tired of dealing with skeezers (since you've got ACTUAL women problems and you ARENT a pimp), and you're dreaming about money you wish you had (because you're THIS close to getting to your dreams). Its too normal for some people, but its what ACTUALLY happens. I think thats why people won't admit they're similar. They want to watch a movie, not witness in the same frame of life they're already in. Thus when they hear Cole, they're just willing to grab onto how it SOUNDS and proclaim it as that much better. Oh well...Thats just how I see it.
I'm anxious for this project to see how he'll twist this story up that we'll already know the answers to. And to be rapping like that at 15 is incredible. You see a clear Eminem influence there.
