Is Martin Scorsese the greatest director ever?

Of course its easy for people to throw out the NO ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE. People just get down right offended when anyone tries to call out an opinion on the"Greatest". You really have no merit on the internet and people are so lightning fast quick to judge that they view you are incapable of trying toselect "the greatest".

Tough to say who the greatest director is because I've only seen so many movies but in the crime-action genre he is easily the best director out there.

I knew it was coming. I cant believe i overlooked your silly @*$

this thread actually lets me know alot about NTers...i can't believe some of the names i'm hearing in this thread...and not even a mention of Tarantinoor Sergio Leone or Robert Rodriguez or Jean-Luc Godard or Francis Ford Cappola and i can go on...i'm talking directors here...NTers just ain't moviebuffs...

Wait...Are you comparing Robert Rodriguez to Martin Scorsese or are you putting him on a list of the top 200 movie directors...

word Robert Rodriguez has no business being mentioned in here. props for Sergio Leone though. and Tarantino needs to make a bunch more great films before istart putting him way up the list. that's coming from someone who thinks Inglorious Basterds is the masterpiece it itself claims to be.

I love these type of topics, they truly magnify people who don't know anything about film. Some of you in here thinking you're really doing it

Marty is a very talented and gifted director, but he is not the greatest ever. I swear NT loves to throw the term "greatest ever" around likenothing.

i'm saying dudes in here are listing names foolishly when there are obviously better directors...people hate on Robert Rod, but he's done more thanmost as far as technical/creativity goes...

Scorcese is great at what he does but he is has a limited range when it comes to filmmaking. Godard is up there, foreign directors are much better.

love how people are naming Godard like yall actually can speak on French New Wave, or even seen movies like Breathless or The 400 Blows for that matter

foreign films are awesome but stop frontin

Who are you to say that anyone in this thread who named a director like Jean Louis Godard can't speak on him? You're just as guilty ofdoing the same thing you're calling others out on by namedropping a couple of his movies. As if that makes you any more of an expert?

I could name other directors like Francois Truffaut, Federico Fellini and Rainer Werner Fassbinder because I've actually seen many of their movies too, butI'm not going to sound like a dickwad and tell other people they're less knowledgeable about what movies they might or might not have seen becausethere's no way for me to know that. You're a little too high on yourself dude.

this is why in my opinion kubrick is better but they are very close. Much much much wider range of film making. Also bubricks movies have muchdeeper meaning, but still I believe they each only have 1 oscar. It is very subjective though as to what you consider a "great" director. Likeothers said, Spielberg, Kubrick, Scorcese, Coppalla, Hitchcok, and possibly Eastwood and Tarantino could all be considered in this coversation. People need todead this "NOT EVEN CLOSE" talk unless you're trying to compare spike jonz to any of these directors.

Dr. Strangelove
2001 Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange
Full Metal Jacket
The Shining

Goodfellas
Taxi Driver
Casino
Ragin Bull
The Departed

Yeah. Kubrick is good, but definately not the best. I see why people like him and are drawn to his different style, but different doesnt = amazing. And Idon't see why people are saying Tarantino needs to make more movies. His directorial style has pretty much been cemented since Pulp Fiction. He's notgonna pump out flicks like Scorsese or others because he actually takes the time to write his own movies. And he has one of the best filmographies out ofanybody

bro im not high on myself you dudes need to relax. So you're saying that based on all the threads i gotta read all the time on Niketalk, Ishould believe there are mad people on here who know about French New Wave cinema? Really? I am in no way a film critic or someone who thinks they know it all,but I have been reading alot about film and watching many films lately. Like I said maybe there are a bunch of you on here who I can have a real legitconversation about film with, but up to this point how the #+@* should i know that

people just throwing the name Godard out there and not even saying nothing about the films, how should i know they aint just pullin up the greatest directorson wikipedia or something.

I'm going to say yes since he's my fav.. but i can think of about 5 other directors that the majority will say are "better" than him.

No, he's great but I'm not a big fan (relatively speaking).
For my money, I'll take Akira Kurosawa.

I understand how he changed directing blah blah blah... can you honestly watch 2001: A Space Odyssey and say you were entertained? Eyes Wide Shut? Boring, boring films, when it comes to speaking about entertainment value.
I bet you see yourself as rebellious and unique because you don't follow the 'sheep,' huh? And thank you for your thoughts on 2001. Ihad no idea that one of the most celebrated (universally, at that) and greatest films ever could be surmised in one word: 'boring.'

Remember, not everyone is as shallow and simple as you.
