Home Buying & Real Estate Thread

Article about that place. I live 5 min from there. What’s crazy is there’s another huge home walking distance from there that’s completely boarded up.

Airbnb used to be good. Prices were good and it felt like the early owners actually tried to make it a good experience. Now anyone with a little extra cash or looking for a little extra is doing it and a lot of them are terrible with extra rules and nonsense. And the fees are now high enough that the price isn't that competitive with a lot of hotels.

Have only used Airbnb with a large group in a vacation area.

I definitely wouldn’t enjoy a bunch of randos constantly coming in and out of my neighbor’s house in the burbs though

I see this building everyday. Nice to see it being utilized after years of sitting there.

The market in the NY/NJ area is so bad currently. I've been looking to buy a home for a few months and the suburbs outside of NY and into NJ are inflated so much now. All the remote workers that moved out of the city area during quarantine aren't leaving bc they got their home when interest was super low and anytime a decent home hits the market, it's sold instantly for 20%+ over asking with inspection, appraisal, etc waived

I had the opposite experience recently in the suburbs of NYC. Great school zone, usually a high demand area.

Made a lowball offer of around 15% less than asking. There was a line to see the place so I thought for sure I'd get beat. One guy even said he's doing an all cash offer. A week later the seller's agent comes back and asks if thats my best offer (clear tactic). I bump it to 10% less than asking, but ask the seller to cover the closing costs.

2 weeks later, my agent says they decided not to sell and that I was the highest offer after the highest dropped.

The supply and demand is just not there.

I pull up to this house in suburban mn to expand a driveway today.

Yellowstone effect was too much man, dude had a Yellowstone tattoo!

His wife was wearing a Dutton ranch shirt too and he has a bull skull on his front door. Bro you live in lakeville. I can’t deal with this.

Every time I go into bass pro, boot barn, etc. and I see Yellowstone merch.. I just chuckle and smh

I’ve seen the Yellowstone Y brand sticker On trucks out here in California

Should have hit them with

It’s not a tv show it’s a lifestyle.

I went to boot barn one time and I was f’ing pissed. I needed work boots and all they had was bedazzle Toby Keith regalia and ****.

I never thought I’d see the day where everyone was a fake cowboy. 🤠

Come to Texas and you'll see how far these Trump loving Californians take it.

Went to a modern steakhouse in Austin and some fresh arrivals from Cali were one table over. Fake blonde rocked a cowboy hat the whole meal and her husband had some of the least worn and clean workwear I have ever seen.

A while back I went into a boot barn looking for a good flannel.. they had a whole rack section setup with Yellowstone merch. That’s the same day I was trying them flannels on and the employees were making it very obvious that they thought I was stealing and were hovering near me the whole time. I left pissed.

Just 2 weeks ago I actually got my first pair of boots; my grandpa up in Idaho needs some help on our land and needs me for 3-4 days. Got some Ariats and broke em in, along with some good pants to work in.

Wouldn’t ever claim to be a cowboy though

There’s a lot more I could post in this subject, as a country musician in California. But I’ll keep it to this lol

Coming in peace and genuine curiosity:

I’ve always heard people in TX and MT and such don’t want Californians unless they’re willing to change. Sounds like these people changed and are trying to assimilate, but that’s not good either?

What’s the actual solution here? I understand it’s not a costume, I play country music and some bluegrass but don’t own a cowboy hat and (up until recently) didn’t own a pair of boots. But still, perhaps they had a genuine interest and want to wear and have that lifestyle?

I am mostly being facetious, but my real beef with the Californians lies in the real estate market being crushed for anybody earning local wages.

A metric **** ton of Californians have come to Austin because it is the most similar to California. Problem here is the Californians that moved here “fled socialist California for a true red experience.” Austin historically is the most liberal and blue part of Texas, meaning those idiots should have just moved to Dallas with the OG Beverly Hillbillies that share their values.

While people should definitely wear what they like and feel comfortable in, cosplaying as a cowboy/cowgirl or rancher is a hilarious sight. You can tell these folks never worked a farm/ranch/any kind of manual labor.

😆. Got mates back in hs that got heavy cowboy influence on them. From those Jeans to boots to music. They have hats but don't necessarily wear them for the sake of identification nor to blend in. Not really pretentious. We could easily identify tourists or someone not from around. It can be hilarious but I guess it's true everywhere else where there are certain norms in that society. I always blend in so it's really difficult to pinpoint what or where you are from originally.

yeah California has really **** on a few states sadly.. including my wet dream of Montana. Yellowstone coming around all but sealed that coffin making it a reality I’ll never get to see. (I’ve been dreaming of that state since 2012)

I don’t enjoy divulging into politics much but I can see your points / issues.

And I hate the costume idea. Always have. Always will. Even now while I wear my first pair of boots to break them in around town, I feel kind of weird because to anyone else I could be mistaken as wearing a costume. But once I fly out next weekend to get to work, I’ll be happy I took the time to break them in.

I’ve been to countless country concerts small and large while wearing clothes that don’t “fit in”.. because I refused to wear a costume. If Sturgill Simpson can basically save country music while wearing New Balances, I think I’m fine wearing Nike’s to shows these days. And yet I’ve still been asked multiple times if “my friend who’s with me brought me” or “if I even like this music”, from people not knowing that I’m the reason my friend (in boots and jeans) was even there

I can respect that.

Similar to Montana, my wife wants to move to Wyoming, but the market there is even more difficult than Austin at this point.

Daily life, I avoid discussing politics as much as possible. NT is where I vent about politics normally.

I only brought it up because the ones that moved to Austin, including Joe Rogan, wanted the benefits of a liberal city but also want to influence politics to move more red. And the fact that they do it while cosplaying in western wear is the icing on the cake.

My list was Montana, Wyoming, Idaho.

MT and WY not happening.

Idaho I have family land I’ll be in charge of once my grandpa passes.. so we’re debating on that right now.

My wife is a California / suburb girl.. once I got old enough I stopped enjoying this life and started dreaming of a small town on a small piece of land unbothered by what goes on in this backwards world. The town my family land is in has a population of about 2,400. I wish I could live near there, or in somewhere that’s a middle ground for my wife and I. At least before I get too old to even take care of the land I will hopefully someday have.

If ID doesn’t work out for me, There are mountain towns scattered across CA that are pretty much unbothered by most of CA’s issues, but once that’s all bought up.. idk where I’ll look after that.

peep the black hills in so dak or Wyoming.

It’s not super redneck. Lots of small towns around with whatever you need but you can get lost in the middle of no where easy.

I move between straight hillbilly and city life lines pretty well. I’m an equipment operator in the country and always dirty af and doing work on farms. nobody is matching my pay and benefits though for an average joe like myself.

I live in the city but I’d rather work in the country and you might catch me at my co workers demolition derby this weekend. 🇺🇸

Can any Chicago area dudes give me a quick list of places to look for a house. Got a great job offer just outside of Naperville and looking for a quiet, safe suburb for my family. Preferably with reasonable access to Chicago.

My grandpa unfortunately passed away last week, but it looks like I might be buying his house for a steal.

If the deal goes through I’ll be beyond excited. The house is a pretty modest 3br, 2ba that could use a lot of renovations but it’s got good bones, a decent amount of property, a sick pool, and it’s located in a great neighborhood.

I talked it over with my mom and my aunt, and while their plan was to sell it they’re much more excited about the prospect of keeping it in the family. My girlfriend is on board and her stepdad is a contractor. He’s made it clear that he wants us to buy a fixer-upper so he can do a lot of our renovations for free.

We’ll see how this plays out, but it’s looking promising.

How big was it and how much $$$$

The city is building a sidewalk next to my house and they already took a bunch of my land and are gonna rebuild half of my drive way that they destroyed... but they quoted my neighbor something crazy like 13k for half his drive way. He has a 3 car garage.

It was just an expansion like 13ft wide by 30ft.

I’ll be honest I don’t know all the prices really I just do the dirt work and tear outs but that seems steep.

We only do residential for friends but I remember doing a 2 car wide driveway by about 30ft long for 6k a few years ago.

Great opportunity. Love hearing stuff like this.

Hope it works out. Keep us updated.
