Home Buying & Real Estate Thread

gsxrpaul gsxrpaul my boy bought up there in 2020 as a vacation/rental spot. It’s been a nightmare dealing with renters - have had so many different issues.
We bought this mainly as a second home and to build equity for our kids in the future. The short term rental market is tough up there, they cap the permits at 900, and if someone already has one within 250ft of your property you can't get one.

They got a pretty decent place (5/3) - it’s on close to an acre I believe. Yeah they have had issue after issue - people smoking inside, leaving dog poop everywhere, someone burned a carpet from a hookah. They did try to do more min. 1 week stays but yeah - strange.

If you ever decide to allow nightly rentals in any way, please lmk. Would love to have a cool getaway spot up in South Lake we can stay at from time to time.

Can we get more info about the bear breaking in?
I have cameras inside and out and we had a mouse problem so when the inside camera alerted I throught it was that. The bear basically ripped/pushed the steel door off the frame. Went inside opened the fridge and ate the little food we had in the house. We called the sheriff and he came and scared it off. I went up that same day to assess the damage after my contractor put some plywood on the door to seal it off. Well the damn bear came back that same night and tried to rip the plywood off. Ended up scaring it off and had some bear nonprofit come out and put an electrified mat outside the door.

Intriguing. Feel like I’m about to go down a bear rabbit hole on YouTube.

Pretty common in South Lake Tahoe. The Air BnB I stayed at for my bachelor party had bear claw marks in the screen door from a bear lightly scratching to get in.

Yep.
I get bears weekly on my cameras, most of the time it's just them passing by. I've seen bears, coyotes, porcupines.

That bear in the kitchen is huge. How do yal just go bout everyday life like walk out to the driveway or let the kids play in the front yard knowing it might be a whole bear around?

For the most part the black bears in Tahoe will go away if you make a lot of noise. The bear non profit said they are really just looking for food, and will usually only attack if you get in their way and block their exit route. I also have guns in the house for protection, and the kids are always where I can see them.

About a year now since we bought a vacation home up in South Lake Tahoe.
So far we did some minor remodeling, new vanities/toilets floors in both bathrooms. New counters/sink floors in the kitchen and all new appliances. New paint inside and out. Had to replace the back door about 3 weeks ago as we had a bear break in an do some damage, so front door is going to be replaced soon as well. Future plan are fence around the property and possibly a detached garage.

Awesome. What part of South Lake? We've been going to Truckee more and more versus when we were younger and targeted South Lake because of the Casinos. Headed up week of 12/19 before X-mas - hopefully good snow to get some skiing in.

I flip flop on whether or not to get a place up there and if we do whether we'd want to ever rent it out. I'm leaning more on going in w/ extended family and dealing with them rather than renters.

Totally and it's getting very restrictive up there too. I've told my wife, if we are able to do it, I want to be able to do it without the need for supplemental income/rental income to cover the costs.

Yep, exactly the way!

We are in the Meyers neighborhood, have a small lake about a 5 minute walk from the house.
We actually wanted to buy in Truckee/Donner but kept getting outbid, so we ended up in South Lake. We are about 10 minutes from Sierra and about 10 minutes from Heavenly.
