Is the African Blood Resistant to Coronavirus?
VERDICT:
Medically False, No Scientific Evidence

CLAIM:
On 10th of February 2020, multiple sources including Abia Pulse News, Kenya Bulletin, African Daily Mail and CityScrollz published a story with the claim that the African Blood Genes are resistant to the Corona Virus, which is currently a global health challenge, with a death toll in mainland China reaching 1,770, with at least 70,548 total cases reported. The report claimed that the Chinese doctors released one Senou, a Cameroonian student who had been infected by the virus, after he was cleared and confirmed cured. The Doctors confirmed that Senou is still alive because of his blood genetic composition mainly found in genetic composition of Sub-Saharan Africans. Screenshots and links of the posts have been shared thousands of times around Africa since February 11, including in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda.

FACT:
According to the World Health Health Organisation (WHO) ‘Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. The Chinese authorities alerted WHO to several cases of unusual pneumonia in Wuhan, a Chinese port city of 11 million people in the Central Hubei province on December 31st, 2019. Then, the virus was unknown.

The WHO declared a global health emergency over the new coronavirus – known as COVID-19 – on January 20, 2020. Aljazeera reports that there are confirmed cases in the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa. Reported Aljazeera.

According to WHO, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the novel coronavirus. However, those infected with 2019-nCoV should receive appropriate care to relieve and treat symptoms, and those with severe illness should receive optimized supportive care.

However, the BBC reported (in French) on February 3, 2020, that a 21-year-old Cameroonian studying at China’s Yangtze University was admitted to hospital in early February. China’s embassy in Cameroon confirmed the development in a tweet on February 5, 2020. But experts have said claims that black people were resistant to the virus were “false information”.

A UK-based specialist in infectious diseases and epidemics, Paul Hunter, told DW that the absence of Covid-19 on the continent maybe largely due to luck. There is nothing special about Africa not having seen a case other than pure chance at the moment… “I doubt we will see a big outbreak in Africa, Droplet diseases don’t seem to be as big an issue in Africa,” he said, adding that SARS, a respiratory disease that is also a coronavirus, spread through 26 countries in 2003 but failed to gain a hold in Africa.

From scientific evidence, there is no medical proof that African blood is resistant to the Coronavirus.

CONCLUSION
There is, therefore, no evidence to support the claim that ‘African Blood Gene’ has immunity to the Covid-19 (Coronavirus). Nigerians must be curious of medical advise, like the salt bath in the case of Ebola virus, which is a rare but deadly virus that causes fever, body aches, and diarrhea, and sometimes bleeding inside and outside the body. Salt bath led to the death of many Nigerians. CDD is, therefore, urging members of the public to disregard the rumours and follow all preventive measures stipulated by the Nigeria Federal Ministry of Health. Let’s join hands to #StopFakeNews.

I have a feeling that Pence quote is taken out of context. If you read exactly what it says, it's true that we don't have enough tests TODAY to meet the anticipated demand. Those will need to be manufactured rapidly.

EDIT: I also just saw the interview between Trump and Hannity and whether you like him or not, what he really said is not what's being reported. Trump didn't dispute Tedros' claim that "3.4% of REPORTED covid-19 cases have died." What he said is that the actual death rate is much lower due to the large number of mild infections that are never reported. I think we all know this is actually true...
But when does speculation override scientific method?

If you can't confirm it by testing don't even mention it

the death rate is of course the confirmed death rate.

I would say you are better off self quarantined than in the hospital as long as you aren’t experiencing breathing difficulty, coughing up blood, etc. All you will do in the hospital is take up resources that could otherwise be used for someone more ill who needs it, potentially infect others (including health workers), and possibly be infected yourself with a different strain or something else entirely.
Has there been any information in how quickly you can go from symptoms to difficult breathing and needing machines?

I believe the lack of information is enough for anyone that has or doesn't have it, to seek medical attention.

Imagine self quarantine and overnight you from mild symptoms to difficult breathing and needing a matching ... is enough to scare someone into going and trying to get a bed.

Shorty just left work because she was feeling sick. Got the stare down and walk of shame on her way out.
Unless cities make it VERY cheap (free) and easy (offering mobile testing, drive-thru, etc) to get tested, the majority of "mild" cases will just continue on their daily lives affecting other people.
This can be done easily. Refer to the video I posted from S Korea. Something about them not doing this makes me think that they intentionally want the "mild cases" to stay out in the wild so everyone can get it build up some sort of resistance and then have it mutate down to a regular seasonal flu strain just like H1N1 swine flu did

Wow this is crazy makes me just wanna stay home to be really safe ... I can’t cuz I have too work , I wish I worked from home ...

I thought you said that this was a hoax created by the demo and that daddy Trump said nothing to worry about?

You came in here spitting facts and now this?

Oh my!

From what I’ve seen, it’s typically not until the second week when pneumonia sets in. Have you ever been to the ER during cold/flu season? In my personal experience, you see everything from people with extreme medical emergencies like gun shot and stab wounds, broken bones, and respiratory failure to trivial things like sore throats and headaches. In my area at least, there are so many uninsured using the ER as their PCP that you are in for a long wait any day/time and want to avoid it at all cost. If my symptoms are manageable I’m staying isolated at home. If I discover I’ve been exposed to a confirmed case of c-19 and start to experience significant symptoms that’s a different story, but you don’t want to walk in with a bad cold and end up with c-19 because you were just being paranoid.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but even in the case of the flu, the total number of annual cases isn’t only the confirmed lab tests, but also includes a best estimate, which is why you’ll typically see a range of cases listed for any given year rather than an exact figure.

For our glass half full peeps, 414 recovered in Italy!

My heart kinda writhe of every time I visit this thread. Percentages be damned, a lot of ppl have died and a lot more will.

Look out for your elderly fam and neighbors. Telling everyone to get 90 say supplies of damn near everything.

Whoa, I don't even think most of us have enough room to store 90 days worth of supplies. I'm hoping I got enough for 30 days, but know for sure I'd have to go out and get things I forgot or can't get easily, which is why CDC would be mad at me for "hoarding" masks.

Make room for the essentials. Idk if I'd consider masks essential though if I'm confined to the house with proper supplies.
