Based on the amount of kicking and punching of the head post-unconsciousness (the video is NSFW, I wouldn't recommend watching it) this could've easily ended up much worse than it did, but it didn't. He has a history of violence but he was also still a juvenile and reportedly has autism. I think some serious psychiatric treatment needs to be included, as this doesn't sound like a person who's all there mentally.
30 years is the absolute maximum sentence. The minimum is probation.
