A pair of Chinese engineering students studying in Oregon allegedly scammed Appleout of hundreds of thousands of dollars, a report said.

Yangyang Zhou and Quan Jiang are accused of bringing thousands of counterfeit iPhones into the US from Hong Kong as a part of a scam that kicked off in April 2017, as previously reported by The Oregonian.

They allegedly send the fakes to Apple, complaining that they wouldn't turn on, and getting fresh, real iPhones in return under the company's warranty system. Those genuine devices were then sent abroad and sold for hundreds of dollars, with Jiang and Zhou getting a cut of the profits, according to court documents.

Those documents note that 1,493 of the 3,069 warranty claims netted a replacement iPhone, and Apple estimated that it lost $895,800 as a result.

The pair were in the US on student visas, prosecutors noted. Zhou, who went to Oregon State University, allegedly shipped the fakes into the US and sent out the replacements they got.

They were apparently rumbled when customs officers seized suspicious shipments bearing the Apple logo, the documents noted. The Cupertino, California, company sent Jiang cease-and-desist letters after he was identified as one of the alleged smugglers by December 2017, but the letters were ignored.

Zhou is accused of submitting false export declarations, while Jiang is accused of trafficking in counterfeit goods and of wire fraud, our sister site ZDNet noted.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Teens at Riverside High School may be in trouble with the law for what happened in one of the school's classrooms.

Investigators confiscated cellphones as part of an investigation into possible child pornography.

Durham Sheriff's Office said multiple students reported that sexually explicit video of students at the school had been shared to social media without one of the student's permission.

As part of his investigation, the school's resource officer spoke to an administrator at Riverside High School who confirmed he had learned that students were using a classroom to engage in sexual activity.

ABC11 learned Monday that a female student reported to a school resource officer that she had argued with a boy over leaked videos of the two having sex. The female student said the video of her performing a sex act on the boy was filmed against her will. She said the boy began to tell other students about the video.



According to a search warrant obtained by ABC11, other students reported to the SRO that the boy uploaded the video to Instagram live on social media. The live footage gave the boy's social media followers access to the sexually explicit content.

Durham Public Schools released the following statement about the investigation.

Riverside Principal Tonya Williams and her team, as well as the Durham County Office of the Sheriff, are investigating allegations that some students engaged in inappropriate sexual activity on the Riverside campus that was then shared to social media. Principal Williams has taken steps to help prevent such incidents from happening in the future. Due to student privacy laws we cannot share any more information on the subject, but we are investigating, and the safety and privacy of our students is our highest concern.

Deputies with Durham Sheriff's Office confiscated the cellphones of the alleged victim and the boy. A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said the investigation into the case is ongoing.
