Where’s everyone from?

Both my parents families are from Pampanga.

Dad is from Mabalacat. Mom is from Bacolor.

This is a fact: Pampanga region of the Philippines especially Angeles & Mabalacat are the most Ameican'ised parts of the Philippines because of the US Military presence when Clark Air base was open there for close to 100 years.

My dad served and retired a chief from the Navy after 21 years. He joined through the program that the Philippines and US had way back when.

I grew up in San Diego which has 2 HUGE Filipino communities: 1 down south in National City, Paradise Hills and even further down south in Chula Vista, but the I mainly gew up in a SD community a little farther up North in a community called Mira Mesa which got nicknamed "Manila Mesa".

As far as dialect languages go. Yes Tagalog is the most commonly used and known in the Philippines. The other that I know are used in other regions in the Philippines is Ilocano,Kapampangan, Pangasinan and others.

Kapampangan's are known for their excellent cooking skills and making some of the best well known filipino dishes.

Ilocano's get a bad rap and are known to be some of the most tight fisted and least generous people . They also get a bad rap because they are known to view and call themselves as a different type and breed of Filipino's. Also the former Philippines President/Dictator Marcos is from that region of the Philippines.

I remember when he was drafted and people went nuts back home cuz we now have a "Filipino" in the NBA, and people started creating Facebook pages about him and claiming he's the Heir Apparent to Kobe LMAO!

Don't even get me started on this dude

There is this NT'er named Mr. Wavez on the Laker thread who defends and reps him so hard even though he's now on the Cavs

I knew about JC and always viewed him as a average & bench role type player.

But nah to answer the question why so many Pinoys are Laker fans. It's not mainly because of Kobe.

Magic Johnson and the Showtime Era Laker teams from the 80's had a lot to do with this.Even before them with Jerry West, Chamberlain etc.

I seriously would be visiting the PI and be drinking San Mig and Red Horse while eating Sisig and Balut and my uncle's cousins would tell stories about watching the Lakers vs Celtics in the Finals.

The dumbest and biggest mis conception is that Boxing was the Philippines #1 sport because of Manny Paquiao during his prime years

Basketball has always been the #1 and biggest sport in the Philippines.

My mom bought us either Bulls/Jordan or Celtics gear during the late 80s to 90s in balikbayan boxes so she made it easier for my bros and I to root for the Green and rock Js.

Basketball is DEFINITELY the Philippines' national pasttime. My dad would share struggle stories of NBA watching days on TV since cable was close to non-existent during their time. They'd wait a few days after games were played before it can be broadcasted in the PH.

MP did open the floodgates of boxing's
popularity in the country. But the way it's being handled is MEH.

But Pac-Man DID NOT make boxing popular in the Philippines. The sport itself made boxing popular. My dad and grandpa used to tell me about Flash Elorde and how he was the greatest Phillipine boxer ever. I didn’t really care because I wasn’t even 10 years old yet and I had never seen him fight. I remember parties used to be thrown when Julio Cesar Chavez fought, then that torch was carried by Oscar De La Hoya.

Speaking of hustled I don’t ever play card games with my dad. He’s the ultimate hustler. He used to work in a casino selling cigarettes when he was a kid to make enough to buy shoes or clothes. He had a keen eye for spotting the hustlers and learning their craft. He took that with him into the military and hustled guys out of their enlistment bonuses then used that money for buy ins to hustle at casino tables. I used to think those stories were hogwash but as I got older I believed them more because looking back we were a single income family on enlisted military grade pay where the bread winner had only a high school education with 6 kids but we took a lot of family trips and had a handful of cars in the driveway and street curb.

IMO, Elorde will ALWAYS be the guy that put boxing on the PH map, but Manny made boxing popular in terms of accessibility. Boxing gyms started to pop up EVERYWHERE and became a new wave of exercising. Ironically, most of 'em are named after Elorde. I was a member at one of the branches near my place in Manila but I gave it up coz it became expensive.

Of course we still have Donaire, Ancajas, Nietes, etc. keeping the sport afloat, but I think Manny just made it watchable, and inspiring for others to follow suit.

I remember Onyok Velasco medalling at the Olympics, the country went bananas!
