While I do believe it's unlikely this case will go anywhere given the details we have so far, I agree that it's a flat out lie that ESPN is feeding usabout covering it. They've ran with stories that had WAY less legs than this story, dealing with far less important sports figures. I mean hell, this isthe slowest sports time of the year for them, why WOULDN'T they cover this if they were running a legitimate news station?


I've said for years and years now that ESPN is a joke. They are almost entirely to blame for making sports into sports entertainment, thereby ruining mostof what I used to enjoy about it all. Don't get me wrong, I loved 24/7 sports coverage when they were pioneering such a platform, but they've longsince stepped over the line of covering sports new into the world of producing sports new.

Do we tune that off completely? You could - you'd miss out on 95 percent of American sports if you boycotted ABC/ESPN entirely though.. and I do believethere are good parts of ESPN still, hidden amongst most of the crap that's put on. We really only have ourselves to blame for it all though. We'vesupported the crap they spew for too long now and they've gotten control of almost the entire American sports market's broadcast rights - I'm notsure what the solution would be at this point, but I do agree that a viable contender for them would definitely help the situation.

It would need the full support of people like us who "get it" however, and I'm not sure how willing most of the people in this thread (and sportsfans in general) are to actually give up the crap they claim not to like - I mean, you can sit here and say you don't like how they do things, but most ofthe people I see complaining are the same ones who can't turn off whatever this week's made up drama is that they're covering. I think people havejust come to like their sports like their reality television, they don't care if it's ridiculous - they just crave the drama at this point.

Until real sports fans are willing to take back sports from the casual/fringe sports fans who are in it for the drama, you can kiss goodbye to the good olddays of it all.

Deadset, ya know Gammons was the first one that made me start questioning ESPN years ago. I had a friend here at work that was a Boston native, and he andI fought every single day about Gammons. I for the live of me never understood why they would hire a guy to talk baseball and in every single one of hiscolumns, he would talk about the Sox, or a former Sox, or a minor league Sox and on and on and on. Oh, and then he would throw out a small tidbit aboutsomeone from the Royals or something.

I friggin hated it.
Simmons is now much the same. He has an agenda, and he runs with it nonstop. And i know that Peter and Bill are good sports guys, and smart and all that, butthey are flat out homers, and they shouldn't work for a global company that has fans that want and rely on unbiased info.

Whoever made the analogy earlier about ESPN being just like MTV is dead on. 5 years from now, ESPN won't even show games anymore, it will be athletesformer and current all starring in reality shows, events, interview type scenarios, and maybe one actual hour left for sports coverage.
It's coming.

- i only watch NBA.....no football, no college, nothing. im not one of these guys that always has the TV glued to ESPN or some type of sport, but with mydistaste of BET over the years i fully understand where you're coming from. with that said, there have been a few boycotts of BET over the years and BET isstill moving right along like they dont even exist

Dan Le Batard defended ESPN by saying that it's not being reported by "credible" outlets, which is clearly nonsense. Both of Pittsburgh's major newspapers have covered it. The Associated Press, the wire service that ESPN makes frequent use of, is covering it. Even ABC News, ESPN's parent company, has mentioned it. Roger Goodell, the Commissioner of the damn NFL, has addressed it. If it wasn't a news story before, it is now. There is no journalistic or ethical excuse for ESPN to remain quiet.

I disagree. Although there is no single competitor across ESPN's entire spectrum of sports coverage, the major American sports leagues all have their ownchannels with quite a bit of league-specific programming and news coverage... NBA TV, MLB Network, NFL Network.

I've already done this. I only use Yahoo Sports for my news... Mainly because the interface is easier to use, and I can check what stories Iwant. Not what is leading the top of the show...

But my point is - it's not like the things they do outrage the American public on the whole... in fact, the percentage of people that actually feelcompelled to stop watching ESPN for this kind of stuff is so small, even if they ALL did pool together, it wouldn't be a blip on the radar of ESPN.

They're a monster but one we've created ourselves. They catered to what people were watching, and now they're just feeding off themselves.

Look back at the ESPN programming in 2004. The company will still be mostly sports broadcasts. It's a very cynical view to think that it will be anydifferent years from now.

Dont even compare Simmons to Gammons. Thats comparing apples to whales. Simmons writes a column. He types his opinions, and ESPN pays to have it on theirwebsite. Gammons is/was a reporter and would actually report on the news and give his advice. Gammons makes it no secret that he's a Sox fan, so whatmore do you want from him? You already know his views before he says whatever he has to say so why complain about it?

I cant defend them for reporting the Shannon Brown story, and not the Ben one but im not very familiar with either story. I just know the basics of them, butin this case it does seem like Bens story should be atleast mentioned. Shannon's case wasnt talked about a lot, and neither should Bens but it needs toatleast be a link on the site.

If I recall, didnt Dirk comment on his situation with his girlfriend? If he did thats makes his case very different and news worthy.

The video of Pacman was released, but its not covered much on SportsCenter or talked about a lot during other programs. Its just another piece of the storythat is/was Pacmans situation.


Im not saying ESPN is perfect because even I know theyre not BUT I just dont see where all the hatred is coming from towards them. I wont get into thepsychological factors behind my reasoning, but I just do not get what all the fuss is about.

Durden, I certainly don't speak for everyone, but I want a channel/corporation to offer me my sports with no agenda. I know they aren't robots or anyof that, but if they get paid to cover a sport, then I want them to report news, or analyze situations based on what's happening or happened, and not justpick and choose based on what might help or hurt them later on down the line.

They were all over the Kobe trial, he still gives interviews to ESPN, why wouldn't Ben? No reason to try and protect anything when all it really does ismake it worse, much like the Nike/Bron dunk tapes.

And for those that say just turn the channel, it works like this, if I tell you a Laker rumor/opinion, you may choose to not believe it as I am a fan. But ifa Nuggets fan tells you the same thing, you might listen to that person as they have nothing at stake in the team. Sound reasonable right?
Well, if I want to know what's up with my Lakers, I can head to fan sites, message boards, they're .com, whatever, but if I want an unbiased opionion,and an analytical look at them, where do I need to go? Should be ESPN right? But if they aren't covering their end of the bargain, we as sports fans arescrewed. I really truly don't need to see 14 reporters outside Brett Favre's house for 7 days straight, to tell me that he's throwing a footballwith his kids, and that they think, that a neighbor thinks, that his wife said, that he might come back.

Does that sort of show what it is that we as sports fans are lookin for? Give us the "real" news, give us the highlights, give us the stats, give usthe games and coverage, give some opinions from "experts" and that's it. No exposes, or rehashing the rehashed or a tired story, or any of thatother agenda stuff they are pulling nowadays.
