Drunk Driving Vol. Please don't do it.

We talking opinions and laws.... Driving drunk is putting someone at risk, I totally agree, but like most crime its not illegal until you get caught. And thinking someone deserves to spend a lot of time in jail based upon the possibility of harm is ridiculous. Something that will NEVER pass.


All in all i'm sorry those two young girls died for something as senseless as that. Not trying to take that away at all.

Did you read anything more than the first sentence I wrote? Says it there as clear as day that 1 year was too long but other harsher forms of punishments like fines and suspensions should come.

Offenses that may not have even resulted in any accidents.

I'm well aware. But its avoidable and would be the drivers fault completely.

Driving drunk is a choice that people make, albeit not a 100% conscious one.

I'm just not seeing how it's excessive. Seems like a favor to everyone else on the road.

Because driving under the influence doesnt warrant a year in jail, its that simple.

It's excessive because in many parts of this country, life revolves around driving.

So a person makes one bad decision on one night and get behind the wheel drunk. They get pulled over by the cops after 3 blocks. The person didn't cause an accident but they get the DUI.

Now this person that caused no harm to anyone loses their license for a year.
- So their kids can't go to school anymore because the parent can't drive them anymore?
- They lose their job because they can't get to work?

Way too big of a punishment for a person that didn't even cause an accident.

I get it man. I know it's tragic, irresponsible, and completely avoidable. For as often as it happens, fatal car accidents caused by drunk drivers are honestly not as common as you would think it is (percentage wise).

I see where you're coming from but people think about stuff like that AFTER they get a DUI.

You can't drive your kids to school if you wrap your car around a tree, either.

I don't know, agree to disagree. I'm all for leniency on certain issues but drunk driving isn't one of those things.

BAL thing most definitely. Like Derry said, a hard lemonade then a trip to grab some groceries doesn't seem horrible to me.

It's people who are damn near black out drunk falling asleep at the wheel swerving that I'm worried about.

I'm pretty sure 90% of NTers between 21-35 have driven home when they shouldn't have at least once, and it only takes one time for something tragic to happen.

I feel bad for both parties.

For all we know dude could of been a stand up guy who made a terrible mistake.

Laws need to be changed. This cannot be tolerated at all.

You get caught once, you go to jail for at least a year. This could happen to anyone at any time.

I didnt even know her like that, but man am i walking around with a heavy heart these last few days.

While  a year in jail is excessive, I'd say at least 2-3 weeks in jail, and suspension of license for a year. I mean how many innocent lives need to be taken for these laws to get tougher?
