Dressing Better Vol 2.0

i recently purchased a nicer high end suit (RLBL), and I chose to keep the leg opening as is straight leg with a slight taper..at around 8.5 inches. I just felt it looked more bold..granted the leg opening is not as trim as my other suits 7.5-8 but the high quality wool is almost silky and drapes very nicely. I know a wider leg opening does not get much love on here..but I just thought i'd try something new...something to consider...no one will laugh at you with a conservative leg opening on your trousers...but in a few years these carrot cut razor tapers will be out dated...IMO it personally looks off when a 6ft built guy is rockin a 7inch leg opening...as Wis pointed out, 8inch is not big at all..depending on fabric..it is still slim

with that being said, the smaller leg openings and more sharp tapers look great on most ..I am a slim guy myself 5'8 140-145

I'm THAT guy :lol

Although I have to disagree. It looks good to me. :D

I'm a 7D in most dress shoes, 28.5 true waist so a 8.5 leg opening will almost swallow my whole shoe. I keep my dress pants anywhere from 7.3-7.75. Anything less will make it look too tapered for me liking and anything more won't look that great imo.

Good stuff. Nice suits have great drape because they're made of fine cloths. A lot of us can thank the Internet for inspirations. Seriously. The Brits were doing this skinny and slim thing for decades. A lot of them still rock 3 button jackets hardcore. Trends swing. Define your own style and stick to it.

Anybody know anything about Wall + Water, thinking of getting these monks.

Also, Meermin is killing it. They're selling great shoes and boots at lower than average prices. I guess since they're part of Carmina, they can pioneer some of the styles and skip costs. The brand just popped up recently but is so popular now. Will be interesting to see if any England brand tries to compete.

Spring style checklist for men

By Greg Keraghosian | Fashionate – Fri, Mar 1, 2013 1:14 PM EST

Article in the spoiler:

So, you’re a guy and it’s almost spring. You’ve been blithely wearing your black, navy and brown clothes all fall and winter, and looking mighty fine that way too. And maybe you’re not welcoming the thought of wearing the kaleidoscope of colors and patterns those puckering dudes in the style catalogues are rocking.

I hear you. You won’t find many pastels or floral patterns in my closet either. But spring does give us a chance to shake things up sartorially, and the transition can be subtle.

I took a spin around the Internets and picked out some clothes and accessories I could actually see myself wearing this spring. If you’re looking for a thaw, not a melt, in your regular wardrobe, consider these:

The suit: J. Crew Ludlow in Oxford cloth
700

This would be a fine lighter, chilled-out alternative to your alpha-male navy wool suit (which should be first in every man’s wardrobe). For some reason the J. Crew site calls this a navy suit, though it’s really more of a blue-gray, thanks to a blend of two different-colored threads.

I like the slim silhouette the Ludlow brand is known for, and this will save you some time with your tailor. As with an Oxford cloth shirt, you’re going to find a little crinkle in these duds, but not so much so that you couldn’t impress your girl’s parents in them. Cost: $506.

The casual jacket: Ben Sherman nylon Harrington
700

I bought the special-edition cotton version of this bomber-style jacket last year, and I’m a fan. The polyester construction and buttoned pockets makes this a sharp-looking, lightweight layering option for dry or wet weather. If you have to have navy, they’ve got it in that color too. Cost: $150

Another casual, lightweight jacket I'm finding myself drawn to is anything with a sporty, baseball-themed look. Spring training is under way, after all.

If logos aren't your thing, take a look at the cotton varsity jackets made by Shades of Grey. As for me, I supported my San Francisco heritage and bought a satin San Francisco Seals windbreaker from Ebbets Field Flannels. They've got a a plethora of vintage baseball team gear, and the quality is top notch.

The button-down shirt: Yellow Oxford from Shades of Grey
700

That’s right, not the mustard color that some fashionistas are into, but straight-up yellow. This makes for a fine curveball in your rotation of white and blue shirts, and you can balance it well with dark-blue jeans and a navy jacket. I haven’t tried the Shades of Grey version, but I bought a yellow long-sleeve from a vintage store 10 years ago, and I give it a gleeful spin every spring and summer. Cost: $99

Also, if you’re on the Jay-Z budget, you won’t find many better floral patterns than this $180 shirt from Gitman Vintage.

The polo shirt: White button-down from Topman
700

You’re going to be invited to barbecues and brunches. Lots and lots of barbecues and brunches. This classic-looking polo will be a heady option for all of them -- the contrast stripe and button-down collar are both great details for the price. And if you’re worried about staining your whites with honey-mustard sauce, Topman has darker versions on their site. Cost: $40.

If you'd rather wear a T-shirt, I like the pocket tee from Club Monaco that goes for $32.50.

The pants: Jeans and chinos from Uniqlo
700

Ever since Japanese Uniqlo opened a store in San Francisco and went online last fall, I’ve been singing their praises to anyone who will listen, and even some who won’t. Their pants are exactly what I’m looking for: slimmed down, simple and affordable without feeling cheap. They’ll even hem your pants for free.

Uniqlo’s jeans are made of sanforized (pre-shrunk) raw denim, and they’re the best bargain I know of. They have a dizzying color array of chinos, but my first choice would be the olive ones in this picture. Cost: Around $40.

The sneakers: Gola Quota Blue Chambray
700

I like my sneakers the same way I like my music: British. I’m a big fan of Golas in general for their lightweight, stylish construction, and these denim kicks would pair well with your worn-in blue jeans. Cost: $60.

The loafers: Robert Wayne Reese in suede
700

Full disclosure: I don’t have any loafers in my arsenal right now and I rarely have because they’ve never really been my style. But aside from being great for airport security lines, loafers can look great in suede and are considered a spring staple. Rather than buying brown or black, think about opting for green-tinted ones like these. I wouldn't spend more than $100 unless they really knocked me out, but at $99.95, these Robert Waynes make the cut.

The belt: Climbing belt from Club Monaco
700

True story: Belts aren’t only made in brown and black leather. If you’re looking to switch things up with your casual pants, this nylon version with a sliding buckle will do just the trick. Cost: $24.50.

The tie: Dotted silk knit tie from The Knottery
700

Dots and ties are like vinegar and French fries – they aren’t paired up often enough. You can match this tie with a conservative suit and plain white shirt, and you’ll still stand out. Even if this pattern doesn’t do it for you, take a long, hard look at knit ties – they both look and feel superb, and they’re good for almost any occasion.

I bought this exact tie from The Knottery last year, in the 2.25-inch width (only the 3-inch is available now). At $30 for its quality, it’s grand larceny – I could have convinced people it cost three times as much. I’d absolutely shop more with these guys.

According to this, I'm about set. :lol I own some close variation of each of those items but that type of polo which I'd actually been looking at on Topman @ Nordstrom, though I wanted to black version (out of my size) and a pair of Golas...not so into them though I like the color a lot. All are really simple and versatile, my favorite is the Harrington or Baracuta style jacket. I have a Ralph Lauren one, no logo, that I got for like $75 down from $180ish.

Same here, man. I'm at the point where my wardrobe is pretty complete. Just need a red topcoat with gold buttons and nothing is really on my list.

You don't want that AE shirt it looks different in person. The levi's is nice and they have a darker color one as well for like $30

What specifically are you trying to find? I can definitely see Macy's nor Dillard's having anything that would meet your physique.
anything that looks good tbh, I've never been into fashion, I've always been into technology more than anything. Recently I've been weening myself away from buying anything else besides clothes but everywhere I go I don't find anything that someone my age would where. I don't like baggy clothing. I rather sport a more fitted look.

What's up DB fam??? Been lurking this thread for the last couple of weeks now and read through almost the whole thing. Wanted to post but I hadn't been on NT since the Yuku days and only just got my username recovered haha.

Good stuff from everybody, really digging GAGJR, KSteezy, wj4, and Pinoy732. Keep up the good work guys.

Pinoy: I too am a 21 yr old college student from NJ. Where do you thrift just curiously? Saw some nice pickups a while back.

If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend checking out the Brooks Brothers sale right now. They've got a ton of Extra Slim Fit shirts on sale for about $40 (~50% off). Just scooped six shirts for $240, can't beat that. The fit is perfect, probably the best fitting shirts I have in my closet now.

Again, keep up the good work everybody and stay dressing well. Hopefully I'll start posting fits soon. Look forward to participating.

The brand just popped up recently but is so popular now. Will be interesting to see if any England brand tries to compete.

I'm really looking forward to getting my pair of Meermin's Double Monks, if they are as impressive in person as they are in pictures I will be ordering another pair likely some oxfords if so. For the price, you can't go wrong.

anythinf that looks good tbh, I've never been into fashion, I've always been into technology more than anything. Recently I've been weening myself away from buying anything else besides clothes but everywhere I go I don't find anything that someone my age would where. I don't like baggy clothing. What size are you in trousers? (Waist and Inseam) The first thing is to really find a place that carries your size, second is finding a good tailor. There is a good chance you're not going to find exactly what you're looking for off-the-rack, but assuming things fit at the waist and thighs with trousers a tailor can take care of the rest. Same with shirts, make sure the shoulders fit, get a tailor to fix the rest. Start with basics, which depending where you live will vary the fabric you want to get so I'll just stick to colors:

Invest in at least 3 trousers and one well fitting pair of dark denim. In regards to the trousers stick to the basics navy, gray, and khaki; I'd even go with a navy suit since you can use the trousers and jacket as separates; again you'll likely have to get things tailored. Shirts: 1 white/navy mini-check, 1 white spread collar, 1 white button down collar, 1 light blue shirt, 1 of your choice but make sure it's something you can mix up with the 3 trousers, like a white/light purple mini-check or white/black or white/gray. Regarding shoes, one brown and black pair of wingtips or cap-toes.
