People who use "needs to be investigated" tend to use it correctly. People who say "needs to be studied" just use it because they saw someone use it and you can tell because it doesn't even fit most of the time. Its like they think its a stand in "this is peculiar" Example:

"Lebron James is still performing at a high level at 40. He needs to be studied"

vs

"So and so's Waffle House order needs to be studied.." WHY?!?! That doesn't even work in hyperbole.

There are quite a few misused hyperbolic phrases by social media. Especially when corporations get their hands on it. Can't think of them right now though.
