THE LION KING Dethrones BLACK PANTHER To Become Tenth Highest-Grossing Movie Worldwide

Jon Favreau's live-action remake of The Lion King has surpassed Marvel's Black Panther at the worldwide box office to become the tenth highest-grossing film ever.

According to Box Office Mojo, The Lion King now sits at $1.351 billion worldwide, knocking 2018's Black Panther down to the 11th spot at $1.346 billion. At the end of the day, they are both under the Disney banner so Mickey Mouse is probably pleased either way.

Of The Lion King's worldwide total, $487.4 million (36%) has come stateside while the remaining $853.8 million has been made overseas in international markets.

This is just the latest milestone for The Lion King which passed Frozen — another Disney pic — last week to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Of course, with Frozen 2 — a very highly anticipated sequel — hitting theaters this November, it'll be interesting to see if Disney can break its own records again.

At this point, it seems like Disney is competing against itself at the box office. Of the top six highest-grossing movies of 2019, Disney is responsible for five of them: Avengers: Endgame (#1, $2.795B), The Lion King (#2, $1.351B), Captain Marvel (#3, $1.128B), Aladdin (#5, $1.035B), and Toy Story (#6, $1.002B).

The Lion King roared into Italy with a $15.9M mouthful. The multi-quad Disney pic, which added a total $30M this session, has now crossed $1.5B in global box office. The pride’s overseas cume is estimated at $997.9M for $1,508.5M worldwide through Sunday. TLK is currently the No. 9 movie of all time globally and will soon pass both Furious 7 and The Avengers to bump further up the chart.

Hearing another clip of Mulan was shown at D23. Happy to see Lion King is doing great and how much longer before we see a Kingdom Hearts series on Disney+?

‘Little Mermaid’ Live: Auliʻi Cravalho Becomes Disney’s Second Colorblind Casting of Ariel

d57bdc25efa65482b04986baa53caa34

Disney is getting into the live TV musical game, and it’s gone colorblind for its casting. ABC President Karey Burke announced at Monday’s Television Critics Association summer press tour that Auliʻi Cravalho will star in the live musical of “The Little Mermaid” on Nov. 5 as part of the “Wonderful World of Disney.”

Cravalho – who is half native Hawaiian and also of Puerto Rican, Portuguese, Chinese, and Irish descent – has already been a Disney princess, having voiced the lead role in 2016’s “Moana.” In July, Disney had revealed Halle Bailey as the first black Ariel for the live-action theatrical remake of “The Little Mermaid.”

Joining Cravahlo as the titular mermaid are Oscar-nominated Emmy winner Queen Latifah, who will play the sea witch Ursula, and musician Shaggy, who will play Ariel’s crab pal Sebastian. More cast will be announced later.

“The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!” honors the 30th anniversary of the classic Disney film. The timing is also fortuitous in that it precedes the launch of Disney+ by a week and can serve as a means to introduce the streaming service to the linear viewing public.

This version will differentiate itself from the live-action feature film by its production, according to execs. “It’s unlike anything that any other musical has done,” said Burke, saying that it includes “seamless interweaving” of the live musical performances with clips from the animated film and puppetry.

The hybrid production will also feature elaborate costumes and sets, as seen below, and be produced by Done+Dusted.

“The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!” will air Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 9 p.m. ET live on ABC.
I have no problem with that. Let's those goodies free.

Some amazing new concept art has been released which not only reveals how some of the main characters were dreamed up (the cartoon accurate Scar is absolutely amazing) but also a handful of moments which didn't make it into the film like Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa chilling out in a tree, a massive sandstorm, and an alternate take on Scar's lair.

There are various other locations and scenes from the film as well and it's really interesting seeing how much work went into bringing this world to life in the concept art stages.

Oh, and for those of you wondering, the artwork comes our way courtesy of Michael Kutsche and Finnian MacManus (both of whom have done work for Marvel Studios).

SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS Live-Action Remake Will Reportedly Begin Production Next Spring

It was reported that Marc Webb was in talks to direct a live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for Disney. Now, according to a new report by The DisInsider, production of the film is to begin in Spring with Webb attached to direct. Specifically, it will take place in March and in Vancouver, Canada.

It's said that the live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be a musical. Thus, Academy Award-winning songwriters, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (known for La La Land and The Greatest Showman) are involved and will write original songs for the film.

As well as when production will begin; the report mentions that Disney has begun the casting search for the roles of the titular "Princess, Prince, Evil Queen/Old Hag, and the seven dwarfs."
