DC Studios THREAD - GunnVerse Begins - Superman Teaser Out Now - 07/11/25

^Wast there a tv show? I feel like a lot more than just comic fans know who he is.

Lets keep it real. No one new of 99% of these heroes before these movies. I doubt people knew who Tony Stark, Thor, Loki were and I KNOW no one knew who Hawkeye and Black Widow was.

John Stewart is the only GL I **** with. Wouldnt mind seeing a movie based on him
There was a Static Shock cartoon back in 03-05, but I remember when he was first introduce and it was alot of hype around him due to the fact he was African American, but I feel people know who Ironman, The Hulk,SpiderMan, etc generally( Thor has always been in that weird realm of Almost Famous type superhero), because those are iconic heroes just Like Batman and Superman, so even though I don't see any problem with minorities playing the icons of the comic world, I truly believe the world isn't ready for that, especially comic book snobs, main reason I stopped reading alot of my favs plus trying to keep up with all the story lines... Mostly into mangas now but the why they are about to bastardize Akira, makes Ben Affleck look like another Oscar Nominee lol

There was a point in time when Static had his tv show that he was quite popular with the generation that had just finished enjoying Batman TAS, 90s Spidey, JL, etc. Right around the the time of JL Unlimited and the new Batman and Superman cartoons. He was pretty popular cuz the show continued even after Milestone closed shop, he had actions figures and all that with his bang baby villains.

I'm not gonna front, now, after DC bough the Milestone characters, nobody knows much about him so his recognition has died down a bit to most ppl who would remember that aren't comic readers would just be like "Oh yeah, I remember him" but there was a time he was black Peter Parker Spider-Man and was fulfilling his potential.

I think with the right push they could revive some of that. Being the first push for a black superhero solo since Blade would get them a lot of praise on it's own. There wouldn't be any worry of backlash either if they were genuine in supporting it since Static has always been black (at best you'd have comic fans crying for why isn't there a Robin or Teen Titans or w/e other teenage superhero movie first). If DC was on the right track and farther along I could see this as their risk project sorta like Marvel doing Guardians but I'm not seeing that happening any time soon since right now WW, GL, and even Flash are risk solo titles for DC/WB.

As for Cyborg, I preferred him on TT but I still found him lame on that show. He had his moments but he seemed to lean more on the comedy relief side with Beast Boy. In the comics now, he just seems like the token black character on JL. Only dude without a solo on that team.

^^^^I see your point on Cyborg but I have always felt Beast Boy and him played off each other....
Now for Static Shock I would whether them risk with his story then the ones named because there is no risk in a WW project unless it ends up like Electra( now that was a risk move)...
Now that you bring up risk I would truly appreciate a Spawn remake(even though it wasnt that bad per se), that was my ultimate hero( especially after I found out he was black), now if Idris was cast as him, then they could take my money right now but I forgot who has the rights to that franchise..

Spawn was my fav too. McFarlane says a remake is coming and Jamie Foxx has been hinting he wants to be Spawn as well.

I get what you're saying though. I'm just saying If DC/WB was farther along Static would be a risk as opposed to a reality where they're tentative about going forward with a WW movie and the like.

McFarlane has said a remake is coming for years. Hes full of ****.

Gotcha
Jaime Foxx wouldn't be a bad Spawn but I wonder how his Electro will go because people are not even giving him a chance with that, lol
And that's why I say the world is not ready for a true icon to be played by a minority and Electro is by far one of the lamest villains ever and Mysterio, lol

I think Cyborg is kinda lame. That "costume" for starters. It's a shame there aren't a whole lot of cool black superheroes. I'd like Idris to be Black Panther but I think Marvel will be going with someone that's a bit younger.

I'd rather he be Icon than Cyborg as far as DC, even though DC is kinda dropping the ball not trying to get a Static Shock movie rolling.

Cyborg is a dark DC character sort of like Dark Knight, and his disfigurement is a metaphor for black consciousness and aesthetic. He's intelligent and athletic but his grotesqueness frightens people. He wrestled with this before the accident. I'm pretty sure Nolan can make treatment for this. Bane's costume was ridiculous and so was the whole cast of Kryptonians in Man of Steel. Cyborg is part of the Justice League after all so at some point it has to happen.

I always thought Blade (1998) set the standard for what a Marvel adaptation should be and Wesley Snipes is one of my favorite actors. There can never be another Blade. NEVER. Coming in second is The Amazing Spider Man, and third The Incredible Hulk.

My biggest issue is replacing white roles with black characters. Blade is an example of what could be, Michael Clarke Duncan is cautionary tale to producers of what can also be when you're a white apologist.

MCD's Kingpin was fine, the movie and other "acting performances" were what was terrible.

I know Cyborg's history for the most part and the meaning behind it isn't much of a revelation. My thing is for the bulk of his history no matter the past reboots he was largely known as a Teen Titan member. It's only been the past few years that he got retconned in to the JL as a token founding member. Which for all of the good writing and treatment he got in the past kind of bothers me not just for that act but his further use and " importance" moving forward.

I would agree that Blade is the benchmark but at this point that occurrence is almost seeming like a flash in the pan that won't be topped let alone decently imitated but I still mention things and hope one of the bigger companies try to do a push like they claim they're doing in comics.

@ Nomad, I mean MCD wasnt that bad for me tho... I mean aesthetically he fit the og character it was just the fact they didnt flesh that character out truly...
Now to say there will never be another "Blade" I disagree in the fact that it did set the bar for in my mind all of Marvel movies(excluding Edward Nortons Hulk) but if they truly found someone that cared about the source material and took it all in and made it unique like Nolan did by interjecting source material with their own perception then I could see a Static Shock or Storms origin movie or a reboot Spawn, it's possible but who is willing to do that with comic movies of our childhoods...
I mean Transformers and TMNT are just cash grabs for the studios that constantly spit in our faces, but I have seen what indie film makers can do and I truly think that's what "Blade" felt like, Wesley understood the source material and he became "Blade", that's why I watch more Indie American films and Asian films then I do American made films because the characters and source material are taken upon by the actors and you can truly see it in their performance..

The world clearly isnt ready for that. Internet damn near got split in two when Donald Glover said he wanted to play Spiderman, or when they announced Ultimate Spiderman was black, or when they announced the original GL was gay, etc.

EDIT: And a few people were mad that one of the gods in Thor, a comic loosely based on Norse mythology, was black. :{

The only superheroes people knew about before these movies are Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Cpt America, Spiderman, X-Men, Hulk and F4 (as well as other characters in their respective comics)

Thor and Ironman were both "almost famous" but still, at least 70% of people who knew them picked up a comic before. I don't recall the Iron Man cartoon even being popular.

I remember in high school we had nerd day where we dressed like a nerd. I brough an Avengers comic to school. Can't remember what issue it was but most people did not know who Iron Man was and nobody knew what the Avengers were.

Certainly gonna be a shortage on A-List black actors and actresses, you know, with them taking affirmative action white roles.

This though. Which is why I respect Will Smith for what he did with After Earth. That was an independent film as well. Imagine if Will Smith took on a production role in Marvel's black comics? Paired with Spike Lee.

Some of the stuff listed here would be better suited as a straight to DVD cartoon or CGI movie. Marvel should be doing more of those.

I found storms origins to be boring tbh. Im sure you can add another layer of depth with animations and artistic frames that you can't find in the comics but it wouldn't be worth Marvel or Fox's time and money to do a live action storm origins film. They would be better off just doing a good job portraying her as a maternal figure to many x-men (like she is).

I agree, to see Luke Cage,Black Panther especially or like I said a true Storm piece( that origins series blew my mind) would definately make my day
@ blotter, that's really strange nobody knew of ironman, I mean I agree that Thor and Tony were always just on the cusp but I guess I am looking at it from the comic reader stance and not general population...yeah that DG blow back about playing Spider-Man had me laughing for days at the sheer ignorance and blatant prejudice that was being said
Edit: I can respect you not liking the Storm series but for me at the time learning more about her instead of the lazy love triangles, etc that was going on with th Xmen at the time was refreshing... Hell I know people who hated Logan's origins but I love the more slow paced story telling

It was a decent story at best(we are talking about Ororo before the Storm right?) but there were no surprises. Mostly everything she had said over and over again in the comics. I expected a larger focus on having to steal to survive or more about her relationship with her family. Felt like they cut a lot of stuff out.

True, it did feel rushed but at least for me it was better then the direction Xmen was taking at the time, pretty much stopped reading Xmen after Magneto pulled the adamantum out of Wolvie, lol, been a very longtime...
Actually I enjoyed the X-23 mini series as well, now got me thinking about reading the new xforce comics with Wolvie as the lead if I am not mistaken

I just read some of the X-23. I really like it. Marvel gives her no love though. :/ And now she is in another bland Avengers book I don't care to read.

The Avengers, the hell???
See I even tried to read the New FF4 with Spidey and couldn't stomach it, marvel just seems all over the place like their movies lol

Lol. Dont know how long you have been out of the game but beast is an avenger like he always was even though he always aligned with the x-men when it came down to it. Wolverine has been an avenger and an x-man for a while now. But unlike beast he is a traitor when **** hits the fan. Avengers started a school for superheroes like the x-men and X-23 is in it. Not sure which other mutants are there. Quicksilver and Scarlet witch are still avengers as you know. Scarlet witches sons are in the young avengers camp. Cpt America Started a team with mutants to combat mutant hate. The uncanny avengers team is Havok, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Cpt America, Wolvie, and Rogue. Rogue has mixed feelings about being on the team cuz in her mind is is us vs them when speaking of mutant avengers relations. Thor is slowly changing her mind about her mentality tho.

Im sure i am missing a few

She's in Avengers Arena which isn't an Avengers book really. It's Battle Royale meets superheroes :smokin

Is that what it is? I thought it was a school. :/

I saw one picture where all the AA characters were in a school type uniform.

Anyway i hear that book is coming to an end. Not sure

Ohh a "Battle Royale" type, interesting... Man @ blotters I have been out the game since 05, lol, didnt know all that had been taking place...also Rogue was another favorite Xmen, but the Avengers, smh, just never could truly get into them or xforce, I knew the team members but I was always lost on story arcs... Been on manga every since 05 lol, might have to take a dive back into Dc/Marvel
