Rose said the ankle hasn’t swelled and he is undergoing a battery of treatments — ice, a stimulation machine, a laser procedure. Coach Fred Hoiberg said Rose likely won’t do much at practice Thursday, so his availability for Friday’s high-profile matchup with the Warriors is in doubt.

"Hopefully we get Derrick moving, get him cutting (at practice Thursday) and see if it feels better," Hoiberg said. "The big thing is we don’t want to take any chances at this time of year and make it a lingering issue."

After several recent practices, Hoiberg has been spotted working with Rose on his jumper. Hoiberg said the goal is to get a more consistent release point and make sure Rose finishes his follow-through higher.

Last year against the Warriors, we didn't have Jimmy.. It would suck for this match up tomorrow to not have Derrick.

Jimmy was great! but that's about it.....Jo looked like he was new to the game of basketball, E'twaun looked nervous as all hell, Gasol was soft I'm tired of this playing for the ref crap! Niko  common man He misses almost every defensive assignment....That 2nd unit of tony,jo,taj,e'twaun and jimmy looked like absolute trash! and with all that being said we def could have won this game. Say what u want about derrick but he is our closer wither he scores or just creates for somebody else. I feel this game is won if chi was healthy. G state moves the ball well and find the mismatch but never got the feeling they are so much better. idk we will see them again Jan 20th!

The Bulls had lost seven consecutive games in Portland entering Tuesday night, with their last victory coming during the season they accidentally tanked for Derrick Rose. That streak is now over. Five Bulls scored in double figures as Chicago outlasted the Trail Blazers 93-88 in a game that got too close for comfort at the end.

Portland tied the game with five minutes left behind some crafty shotmaking from guard C.J. McCollum, but Jimmy Butler's clutch free throwing shooting and a nice late stop by Joakim Noah kept the win intact. The Bulls are now 9-4, and 75% of the way through the Circus Trip with a 2-1 record to show for it thus far.

This was Derrick Rose's return to the lineup, and he played the type of uneven game we've come to expect. Rose found a nice rhythm with his midrange bank shot, but struggled at the rim and couldn't really get the offense into a consistent flow. He finished the game with 17 points on 7-of-20 shooting with six assists and four rebounds. Not the most efficient performance, but I thought his defense on Damian Lillard was encouraging (Lillard finished with 19 points on 4-of-22 shooting) and his speed is always good for a few easy buckets over the course of any given night. He also did a good job taking care of the ball.

Once again, Jimmy Butler was a monster. He led the Bulls with 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting, aided by 8-for-8 shooting from the foul line. He hit a halfcourt shot at the halftime buzzer and got into it with Mason Plumlee in the fourth. Don't mess with the Tomball cowboy:

Some observations in bullet point form:


•Rose got some run with the second unit (Noah-Taj-Doug-Kirk) in the second and fourth and that seemed to get him going offensively. It could be a nice way of urging him to be more aggressive.
•Snell came into this game as a 43 percent three-point shooter, but was brutal today. He finished 1-for-6 from the field and 1-of-5 from three-point range, which included some wide open bricks.

•Doug McDermott's defense tonight: potentially passable?
•I'm losing it with Pau. It's nothing new: he's so slow, he doesn't box out, he eats so many possessions that could be redistributed elsewhere. He ended the night with 12 points on 5-of-15 shooting.
•Taj and Noah each played with great energy. The combined for 17 points and 13 rebounds in 27 minutes.
•Kirk Hinrich played crunch-time minutes, and I couldn't even complain about it on Twitter because Snell was so bad and Doug was whatever. He finished with three points in 27 minutes, played some solid defense on Portland's guards and didn't hurt the team too much. We'll take it.

Jimmy Butler wants Mason Plumlee to pay his fine

PORTLAND— It wasn’t quite the confrontation in last spring’s playoffs between Taj Gibson and Matthew Dellavedova, but Jimmy Butler and Trailblazers center Mason Plumlee got themselves into a bit of a physical confrontation in the Bulls’ 93-88 win Tuesday.

Plumlee charged into Butler with his shoulder in the fourth quarter, and Butler retaliated by locking Plumlee’s legs, causing him to fall. The two locked heads but that was about it.

It’ll likely cost Butler $2,500 since he picked up a technical foul, and Plumlee was assessed a flagrant one, but Butler wasn’t pleased with Plumlee after the game.

“He thought he was playing football for a second there,” Butler said. “Almost had to let the Fort Greene Projects out of me, Brooklyn, you know what I’m saying?”

It was said tongue in cheek considering Gibson was a few feet over and Butler wanted to draw some laughs. Gibson is a Brooklyn native and grew up in the Fort Greene Projects while Butler grew up in Tomball, Texas.

“Taj is, though,” said Butler when reminded he wasn’t from New York. “Basketball, emotions, part of the game.”

It was no laughing matter when he said he would find a way to approach Plumlee about the fine money, jokingly suggesting he would have his agent email him at “Mr. [email protected] or something” and made a joke about Mike Dunleavy applauding Plumlee’s act.

Plumlee and Dunleavy are products of Duke University.

“Yeah, he cost me 2,500,” Butler said. “I’m not happy about that. Gonna ask him to pay me back and I’m not playing.”

When Michael Jordan retired following the Chicago Bulls’ sixth championship in 1998, the team underwent a roster-clearing process and subsequent rebuild under GM Jerry Krause. The post-Jordan Bulls were a disastrous dumpster fire over the next six seasons, compiling a 119-341 record. At the end of the 2003 season, Krause was allowed to resign, and Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf brought in John Paxson, a former player with no front office experience.

You could say the Bulls had some success in the first 12 years of the Paxson era. After a final bad year in which he purged the roster and reshaped it under his own vision, the Bulls have made the playoffs 10 of their last 11 seasons. During that span, they’ve averaged 46 wins per season and hit a high of 62 regular season victories in 2010-11.

But despite some success, the majority of Paxson’s reign has been marked by boneheaded mistakes, conflicts with coaches, and consistent failure to advance beyond the second round of the playoffs.

The first coach who was hired under the Paxson regime was Scott Skiles, who was integral in helping instill defense and execution into the young Bulls squad in 2004-05. That team started 0-9 but finished 47-35 on the season. After three trips to the playoffs and one series victory, the Bulls and Skiles bitterly broke up on Christmas Eve in 2007.

The bad season allowed the Bulls to luck into the first pick in the draft that year, landing Derrick Rose. Paxson hired Vinny Del Negro, a brand-new head coach with zero experience on the bench, to lead a team filled with young talent and a 19-year-old point guard. After two mediocre seasons and an embarrassing incident in which Paxson physically assaulted Del Negro, the coach was fired. How was Paxson punished? He was promoted to VP of Basketball Operations, with Gar Forman taking his old job at GM.

Forman hired Tom Thibodeau, an intelligent tactician and workaholic, to lead the next era of Bulls basketball. The Bulls front office, in the mean time, cleared cap space in pursuit of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. While the Miami Heat ended up with all three players, the Bulls were left with just Carlos Boozer and a handful of role players. Still, a combination of Thibodeau’s teachings and Rose’s MVP season got the Bulls to the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat before losing 4-1.

That was the Bulls’ only trip to the Eastern Conference Finals in Paxson’s 12 years in charge. Rose’s knee injuries complicated matters, and the Bulls quickly fell further and further away from championship contention. The front office couldn’t maintain a quality relationship with their coach — again — and Thibodeau was fired last June after the Cleveland Cavaliers eliminated the Bulls from the playoffs.

In a full display of arrogance and lack of self-awareness, the Bulls hired Fred Hoiberg, their third consecutive rookie head coach, and brought back nearly the exact same roster from the season before. Paxson so strongly believed that Thibodeau was the only problem that he willingly placed all the pressure on his new coach to win with the same flawed roster.

But arrogance and a childish inability to get along with the men he hired to coach the team aren’t the only major blunders Paxson committed in his time with the franchise. Drafting LaMarcus Aldridge in 2007 and promptly trading him to Portland for Tyrus Thomas is one of the most egregious draft-day trades in modern NBA history.

A lot of the drafting under Paxson’s watch has been good, with Bulls’ hires including Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich, Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson, Nikola Mirotic, and Jimmy Butler. But the Bulls have struggled to land a true star, whether it be via free agency, the draft, or the trade market.

The Los Angeles Lakers seemed willing to trade Kobe Bryant to the Bulls in 2007, but Paxson refused to part with Deng. The Bulls tried and failed repeatedly to land Pau Gasol. And it wasn’t until Butler broke out last year that the Bulls finally managed to pair a dynamic star with Rose, who was just a shell of his former self at that point.

On top of it all, some NBA insiders attribute drafting Butler more to Thibodeau than Paxson or Forman. Some have said that Thibodeau pushed the Bulls front office hard to draft Butler, and with the relationship still functioning well at that time, they listened to his pleas. But the next year Thibodeau again pleaded with the Bulls front office, this time to take Draymond Green with their late first-round selection. Instead, they took point guard Marquis Teague.

Low-balling Jimmy Butler, who requested just $12 million per season, only to see him break out and command a max contract the next summer. Claiming they’d match any offer on restricted free agent Omer Asik, only to let him walk away without any compensation. Trading a 23-year-old Tyson Chandler for J.R. Smith, and then releasing Smith. Trading Kyle Korver for nothing. The list of mistakes goes on forever for Paxson and Forman, who seem to completely avoid accountability under the fiercely loyal Reinsdorf.

So now it’s Hoiberg’s turn. He’ll likely get some input on roster construction going forward, but if he cannot lead the team on the court to a championship, he’ll eventually get the boot as well. They’ve gone 12 seasons with one trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, winning just one game. They’ve been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs six times, and they’ve won just five total playoff series.

You may wonder how many NBA executives can survive more than a decade with such mediocre production. But the question you should ask is, while they are more than willing to blame the team’s failure on the coaches they hire, why do John Paxson and Gar Forman continually escape accountability?

Am I reading this right??
I never try to against any of my Bulls fam, as a matter of fact I'll try to jump in and agree or stand by whatever some of y'all might say, but you guys are either too young or really don't understand the mechanics behind the business of basketball.

Reinsdorf has zero incentives to sell the Bulls! None, zip, zilch, nada!
The Bulls have one of the longest standing streaks of home sell out games.
Aside from Atlanta the Bulls have the longest active streak of making it into the playoffs (10years). Beside the fact that Rose is a shell of himself his jersey still sells and so does Jimmy's now.
Reinsdorf merely cuts the checks. I'm sure he's a cheap, frugal bastard who doesn't want to pay the lux, but he still pays the players.

The article I posted really points out all the blunders Pax and Gar have made. Even then they've managed to do a good enough job to keep us relevant and somewhat successful. While I may not like Reinsdorf as an owner (at least he's not Sterling), his loyalty to his GM's really may hinder us from ever getting over the hump. Pax and Gar have showed they're inability to sign top free agents or make a dramatic blockbuster trade.

My biggest peeve about the whole situation is that we will be stuck in limbo. Meaning we will be good enough to make the playoffs in the East, but not good enough to win it all. It just kinda of sucks, cause I feel like the window is closing and then it will be a rebuild all over again.
