It probably is.  Most of the recreational models Wilson makes are made from synthetic leather these days, but the official game ball ("the Duke"), is made from cow hide, which would make it impossibly hypocritical.  (Albeit nothing new for an organization that sponsors kill "shelters.")

Given not the likelihood but the certainty of confusion, it was a stupid move on PETA's part.  If you want people to reconsider their consumption of animal products, the last thing you want is to give cynics a reason to believe that the entire effort is hopeless, that "even PETA" can't avoid their reliance on animal products. 

This is really par for the course from their media campaigns, though.  They seem to subscribe to the the belief that there is no such thing as bad publicity and that, no matter how their efforts could be viewed as poisoning the well, it's better to be a part of the public dialog in some way than to go ignored, as animal rights issues so often are.  I'm sure they consider it a win that you're even talking about this.

It's a flawed campaign on a number of levels, but if their only goal was to attract attention, then clearly they've succeeded.  Whether this is actually helpful or not, however, is another animal.
