what paint is recommended?  Acrylic or oil based?

acrylic would chip/crack really fast. i think you would either go with a latex based paint or some really strong spray paint

so that stuff you can use on plastic they show on t.v. would work?

I highly doubt there's a paint that you can use for the outsole of a shoe. (I'm an artist/house painter and I've never seen or heard of such a product) Midsoles, use Angelus paint.

you can use any paint to paint the sole but nothing will last because it will just wear away as you are walking.
