Black Culture Discussion Thread

I commented on a video where a dude criticized hip hop culture, but heaped praise to Jewish and Chinese people, who do the same stuff that he’s appalled by us doing.

That’s my only reasoning. Now y’all want to backtrack because I proved dude in the video wrong

First off you didn’t PROVE dude or anybody wrong thus far. You provided an opinion. Second, let’s go with the point that the guy in the video stated about Jewish and Chinese people. Would you say the collective image of Jewish and or Chinese people is in a better state than us as black people?? Be it amongst ourselves or to outside entities.

I didn't get from the video that drill music was supposed to represent the entirety of black music. Have any members of narcocorridas been shot and killed as well?
Yes. They celebrate drug lords in their songs, and some singers have been killed by opposing factions.

I get his point about drill music. The beats may be catchy, but everything around it is saddening and negative IMO. My point is, the fact that this subgenre of rap leads to a wholesale condemnation of black music suggests that he thinks rap defines black culture. The persistence of this perception of rap music (especially the worst aspects of it) is what is problematic.

Why do you care about what those people think about us? That’s the #1 issue with black people. Always trying to code switch or be accepted. Bruh I could care less about what a white, Asian, or Chinese person thinks about me. Especially when they emulate more than we do them :lol :lol :lol :lol

I don’t understand. I’ve never been embarrassed about the image of my people. That’s the first level of self hate. Trying to appease other races. No matter what you do, they still gone stigmatize you. Some of y’all care to much about making them people comfortable. Not me

Drill music sucks. But again, rap fans really don’t know anything about lyricism or music theory anymore. Same people who complain about it, call dudes like J. Cole boring or 80s and 90s rap dusty.

Most these young cats can’t rap anyway. But again, you’ve got dudes like the one in that video talking nonsense. The stuff that’s promoted these is hyped up, why? Because the fans just accept anything. Nowadays they consider anything good, even if dudes are literally rapping jibberish or talking about killing some in every verse.

The fans are just as guilty as the artists because they embrace so much of the garbage.

The answer to this question depends on whether you're asking it to a Nigerian, a Kenyan, an American, a Palestinian, or a Saudi Arabian.

Im old but im not one of those uncs who thinks modern rap is bad. Growing up we had trash like no limit and of most of cash money.

This generation gave us kendrick and a lot of good music. Even "mumble rappers" like future are good in doses. We criticize mumble rap like we understood ANYTHING the bone thugs were rambling about.

Outside of this thread bubble I'd agree his comments could be taken as condemnation of rap as a whole and not the particular sub genre. The comparison to other cultures is not really needed or important to the point he was trying to make, which it seems we both agree on.

You didn’t answer the question by the way. I’ll give you more time to put together your response.

Who said anything about trying to be accepted champ?? There’s a difference between reflecting on your self-image to the world versus doing any and everything to please others. Image is important whether you understand that or not. From the images we see on television of us, to the images we see in movies of us, to the images we voluntarily portray in our music, to the images broadcasted around the world by news outlets.

The image that is put out there will often lead to how you or your group is treated. That should be common knowledge particularly to anybody in here. To act like it isn’t is naive at best.

Go ahead and let the people who copy your culture (ironically, hip hop, “ratchet ness” and black athletes are the most emulated entities on earth currently)

Miley Cyrus copied, you’ve got white women on youtube doing classes titled “twerk fitness”  (another thing copied from black people). When they tried to send Uncle Luke and 2 Live Crew to prison for showcasing it in their videos (I’m sure you didn’t know this)

Kim Kardashian made a wholeeee industry of copying black women. She got her body done… to appeal to black people. White women wanted the Pam Anderson, big breast aesthetic in the past, now all of a sudden they want to be considered voluptuous… again, to copy black women.

So tell me where our “image” is falling short…. When EVERYONE in America and damn near globally wants to be us?

Hip hop is the most CONSUMED genre amongst all people under 25 currently on earth…. Show me where our image (which is negative according to you) is affecting us? Again, we are the most copied beings on this planet.

I don’t use tik tok, but look at the demographics of it… they’re using dances created by whom…? Black people.

So again….. show me what’s so terrible about our image, when “others” are trying to capitalize off us…

Go to any sporting event, ride through traffic in any major city, rap music is being played.

People of ALL races out here with tattoos all over their face and bodies, but again, “image”? Don’t get me started on all the piercings either

IMAGE I tell ya! IMAGE!! :lol :lol :rollin :rollin

Look at you worried about your cultures image being a detriment:lol

It’s POLICE officers out here making tik tok videos… doing dances created by black people, and you talking about some “the image you put out there is how your group will be treated” ….

Let that sink in bruh. The people put in place to “hold you back” and monitor your image…. Are doing lame dances on tik tok, and you care about what they are think about you

Go ahead and keep code switching around them

When you’re ready to answer my original question to you about the image of Jewish or Chinese people compared to that of Black people…..(when asking an American gry60 gry60 ) let me know. Everything else you typed up is a deflection. I appreciate your zeal towards this discussion however………just looking for the knowledge portion to kick in.

An American.
Even then, how Jewish and Chinese folks are seen depends on who in the US you talk to: we have anti-Jewish conspiracy theorists and groups that embrace these ideas here; we have people who exhibit anti-Chinese sentiment here too. You can't say that the perception of these two groups in the US is entirely positive.

The image that is put out there will often lead to how you or your group is treated.
Now, who's putting specific images of Black folks out there for the world to see?

For most of American history, black people have been portrayed negatively, and those who know better can't simply accept that what they show is a comprehensive and accurate representation of black culture, black norms, and black behavior.

Meyer Lansky was Jewish… right? There’s a Jewish Mob also, correct?

Israel is also one of the largest weapons/armament producers in the world. Again, show me where they’re manufacturing guns at in the hood

Israel still bombing Palestine…?

But fortunately I don’t care about my cultures image being compared to the Jewish or Chinese population because they do the same stuff, that we’re so ashameddddd of :lol :lol :lol :lol

You care about what they think about you

Still waiting on either of you dudes to answer the question. Dudes doing any and everything but addressing the question as is.

That’s another thing too……..to all the brothas out there when somebody asks you a question stop beating around the bush and answer the question as is. I’m seeing too many dudes these days not speaking up, not answering questions, doing a bunch of deflecting. Need brothas to learn how to communicate. I’m not sure what’s going on these days and why but it needs to stop. That’s the last thing we need out here.

We’re suppose to be talking about black empowerment in here and we got dudes posting random Getty Images of white and Asian people just for the hell of it. No rhyme or reason whatsoever.

Same way y’all posted that random, lame, bozo dude talking down about “rap music”

There’s plenty conscious rap music, past and present.

The “problem” with y’all brothers, is y’all whine and cry like women. Modern black men are too emotional, too feminine. We can tell who never had positive male reinforcement. Go see a therapist.

Social media has turned some of you dudes into women. Y’all gossip just like them. Me personally, I don’t care and don’t want to observe it. It’s ridiculous at this point. There’s and entire generation of whiny, pacified dudes.

That’s why you can’t have conversations. Why? Because men are soft, coddled, cry and complain to much. People don’t want to hear that nonsense all day. Our ancestors would be ashamed of some of you dudes. I see it everyday. I never in a million years could’ve envisioned how weak some of you men have become.

We won’t ever get another Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Noble Drew Ali, MLK, Fred Hampton or Ali. Dudes are not build like them nowadays.

All that babble above and still no answer to my direct question to you. Bless your heart.

'It Wasn’t The Best Business For Me' — Pusha T Partners With Arby's Again And Takes Ownership After Learning His Lesson With McDonald's

Pusha T is teaming up with Arbys for the second time this year to seemingly troll the company’s fast-food competitor McDonald’s, but not without partial ownership of his work

All that babble above and still no answer to my direct question to you. Bless your heart.

I know you didn't ask me directly so pardon my nose...

"Would you say the collective image of Jewish and or Chinese people is in a better state than us as black people?? Be it amongst ourselves or to outside entities."

This question presupposes the existence of a "collective image" when only racists / prejudiced folks invest in such things when it comes to race.

Basically a loaded question...unless you're a racist / prejudiced.

Example: Who took this "collective" image of people?

Probably the same type of folks who decided my ancestors had to be Black just so they could be White.

If anything, my life has taught me that people are just people and, as such, refuse to invest in anyone else's "collective images".

The whole reason people are even called European, Asian, or African, in the first place is because the Greeks said so.

For the sake of argument, if I did (and I don't) believe in race based collective images - in my mind there would be no worse "collective image" on the planet than white folks and could point to hundreds of years of history / reasons - even into the present day - to support my opinion.

None of those reasons would excuse my racism / prejudice though.

Race does not exist.

Race is a social construct.

Anything built upon a social construct cannot be separated from that foundation.

Still waiting on either of you dudes to answer the question
Nobody is beating around the bush.

The answer is, "it depends." That means, the overwhelmingly positive opinion of these people that you speak of doesn't exist.

What do racist Americans think of Jewish people? What about blue collar Americans, what do they think of Chinese folks? Do American academics think the same of these two groups? No.

That's the answer.
