Black Culture Discussion Thread

Thoughts?

Yeah, Maybe the NBA (the Players, the Media, the Front Offices and the Fans) Ain’t as ‘Woke’ as It Pretends to Be https://verysmartbrothas.theroot.co...Wku5Uw5wIkvRNrwws1tpZ56Pmeew6bhkSNszTzd3T9blQ

In general, I think it a bit foolish to think that any business for profit and its employees would be genuinely "Woke". The ultimate goal of the NBA is to make money. Anything else is secondary.

Unfortunately I am familiar with Damon Young's work and he is horrible when it comes to writing about black people. He is very jaded and bitter towards the community. Homie writes like a scorn women without any sense of logic, facts or basis to the argument. He is just trying to trigger a response to something associated with black plight. Dude stays reaching for something that isn't there. Who in their right mind is really looking for the NBA to be on battleground for civil rights? Overall that article was a wack topic and horribly put together IMO.

All of Africa ain't 3rd world... wtf

You people who have this stigmatized view of Africa are misinformed and miseducated.

My cousin went to Africa and visited several countries. She said being in certain parts of South Africa felt like being in NY.. she had the best weed brownie in Ethiopia. .. and went clubbing in some other country and had a blast...

Africa is 3 or 4x the size of this country and ya'll know how much different the south side of alaBama is to Beverly Hills...

I'm going to Africa as soon as this bitcoin bull run makes me quit my job

it is very possible my view of african countries is stigmatized, misinformed, and miseducated; in my adolescence it was mainly used as a threat by the parental units for wayward kids and only occasionally referenced as the 'beautiful homeland that should be returned to' via those same parental units through the wistful fog of nostalgia...so mine own opinion may indeed be clouded, but in the context of comparing well known tourist destinations in the industrialized world to travel to most african nations, i think it is fair to say that most people coming from industrialized nations will likely have to do a lil' more adjusting of their expectations in their travels to countries in africa...which isn't meant to be a deterrent (it would be dope if more people did go!) or to say one cannot thoroughly enjoy their time there, or that there aren't modern amenities about in many african cities/spots...

but as much as people are more aware of what is shown to them via romanticized images of travel to europe, exotic travels in asia, or adventurous jaunts in south america, in comparison to maybe not so favorable depictions of africa, fact is most of africa (both saharan & sub-saharan) are developing nations...and it is understandable that some just ain't on that type of time for a given moment, especially given it might cost just as much, maybe more, as the 'ig ready generic cliche travel spot' and things like strong infrastructure & institutions are not quite at the level where it is easy for a tourist to navigate with confidence

i mean by some metrics china is still considered a developing country despite having many well developed modern population centers...it's still a communist country tho, and thus understandably maybe not an easy adjustment for chinese born in more liberal places

We been conditioned to think Africa is just this place where it's poverty and kids starving. I've seen pics all through Africa and it looks beautiful.

Over here, in this racist ran country they want us to think Africa is horrible. That's why they show us those feed the children commercials and that's basically the only view America shows of Africa.

yea whenever I see black people on my timeline on ig or FB going to vacation every else but Africa, I slide in their DM and curse them out.

Black people we need to do a better job of taking back our narrative of our own home continent.

yea your trippin bruh, a flight to london is half the cost of a flight to nairobi. You need to stop worrying about where other people are going and worry about yourself b

I'm totally biased on the matter as I'm a DRose fanboy..But I'm totally shocked that his case is pretty consistently being brought up regarding his game on Halloween. I read two articles that focused on his rape case the morning after...an additional blog page from a Wolves fan/reporter and this one being the fourth.

It's been a while since I've gone over the details of the case, and Rose said a lot of stupid **** during the trail. I didn't walk away from the information I received feeling as though Rose was a rapist. I felt like he used a woman's desire to be with him to the point where she did things she previously stated she was not interested in doing. But i did not feel as though he forced, coerced, or tricked her. I wonder what the people who feel the need to bring up his rape case in relation to the praise he's receiving for playing basketball well took from the information from the case. Hell, did they even read it or just follow the juicy tidbits that came out (I don't know what consent is...we men...I'm color blind but I know pink when I see it.).
It's a weird world we live in. I don't like to dismiss people's feelings but got damn folks are offended by everything these days. Court of law used to be enough for people to **** off with their opinions.

We have to be careful who we Give passes too and allow to prosper off hip hop culture. Admittedly I do listen to this kids music. I know we (black people) do not control majority of the financial institutions in hip hop but you get non-black people who classify themselves as a "minority" or "person of color" and they go on these types of rants forgetting that it was black people and hip hop (a offsrping of black culture) that got them to the position of wealth and popularity they're are in today.

/Rant

Thank you for that bro, we need to stop being so cool with any and everyone running hip-ho, rap, and all other forms of entertainment that is inherently black.

His music is trash and most likely he's working with the police and he's a plant. Everything about him screams fraudulent. Begging for attention, everything he does. He's a rat.

top countries I would love to visit in Africa

1) Senegal (African Renaissance Statue)
2) Cape Verde
3) Zimbabwe ( would love to see Victoria Falls, espcially Devils Spring)
4) Tanzania (Only hear great things about there)
5) Cameroon (most of my DNA is from there)
6) Ghana (most easily accessible English speaking country for tourist besides South Africa)

Speaking of traveling to African cities/countries, I've been considering going to Lagos next year (asking in here vs the travel thread since that's full of typical Asian/European topics). I have an American born Nigerian friend who complains about the infrastructure, traffic, and pollution in Lagos, but honestly just from seeing pics, it doesn't look much different than what I've experienced in major cities in Indonesia, India, etc. (and I've gone to those places many times to visit family and friends). It's nothing I would complain about during a vacation.

My main question is about Victoria Island; every website keeps recommending tourists to stay in/explore that area. Don't get me wrong, it looks nice, but it doesn't look like much of a fun or "cultural" area if that makes sense. It looks like a place I'd live in vs. a place I'd explore for authentic Nigerian culture (while still having modern lodging/facilities). From what my friend told me, you can only have one or the other, but dude is too Americanized for me to fully trust him

I don't mind staying there if it's easy to get to/from the areas I'm looking for, but these websites keep telling me "If you're planning to get anywhere on the mainland, give yourself at least a couple hours to get there".

Any Nigerians in here/people who've been there can give me more recommendations for the type of spots/areas I'm looking for?

what type of areas/spots are you looking for though? i don't have any recommendations really, just to say, it won't really matter where you go in the lagos area, you will get 'authentic nigerian culture' and you will probably stand out anyways, if not by appearance by your accent...the best thing you could do is connect/go with someone who is familiar, that way that person can put you on to what/which experiences you are looking for because what your friend is saying is for the most part true but not necessarily overwhelming so; traffic can definitely be an ordeal tho! (best way to get around that is basically as motorcycle passenger if you do hit the mainland) in many parts of lagos intermittent blackouts are a thing, and i'd guess that this is less the case in the vi area; which is likely why this it is consistently mentioned besides it being expensive...

Got it, most of the websites I was looking at were saying that Victoria Island has a lot of expats, so it made me not want to stay in that area that much, but it sounds like it still has a "real" Nigerian feel to it. I usually avoid areas known for expats, cause they're usually full of drunk Aussies and English folk

I'm definitely trying to check out the best non-touristy food spots and local markets. Planning on checking out some museums and art galleries too
