Black Culture Discussion Thread

I seen pics
All over ig
Was I the only one weirded out
By everything everyone was wearing
Like it had a religious like theme to it
Like EVERY pic I seen
everyone’s outfit was almost on some cult
Type ****

I had no idea what this Met Gala was all about until I saw pics. I was weirded out as well. But this is Hollywood so any chance to get some attention they'll gladly take it no matter how weird it looks. Especially if you're a washed celebrity.

We (must) prioritize them in terms of licenses. It's a form of reparations."

The comments came under fire from some community leaders.

"I'm for legalizing marijuana and I like Cynthia Nixon but putting pot shops in our communities is not reparations," the Rev. Al Sharpton tweeted. "Health care, education !!"

The irony of it is that unlike alcohol, weed has proven medicinal applications. In addition, having marijuana-centered businesses in communities could attract chemists, biologists, (somebody need to research further applications of the plant), engineers (somebody needs to package it at an industrial scale), clinics; it could increase the tax base of those communities, which means more money available to be invested in local services and schools.

I get it's a fundraiser, but the whole thing just seems like a cluster**** of pretentiousness.

Just picked up Between the World and Me. Anyone read it?

I’ve had it since June; recently started it. Should’ve read in a day but, haven’t finished. I need to write a letter to my son. He’s 10 and doesn’t see the world for what it is. I’ll let him enjoy his youth a little while longer.

What other books y’all reading? Any suggestions/must reads.

I got my summer reading list ready to go.

Most of these are done while others I need to finish

That's an interesting list. I read Pimp many years ago and it's still one of my favorite books. Imma have to see what that Babalawo is hittin on.
At the moment I'm not reading much cuz I've been busy, but I'm working on these two books below.

So far the Babalawo book is solid for those in and around Yoruba/Ifa/Orisha religious and spiritual practices. I'm on the fence about becoming a babalawo (just because of the commitment to the practice) in the near future so its in my reading list but I still say go for it.

Pimp is fire so far. I'm surprised about how many people were influenced by the book.

That was just my black list though. I'm stuck trying to finish the books below.

I'm going to check out Zora Neale Hurston. Thanks for the recommendation.

So Somalis think they're not black? The world see them as black.
I really dislike this argument. It's not false it just seems to imply that people should just forget their own self beliefs because of what other people say. Why would you give up your own internal locus of control for an external one? It's such a reactive perspective.

I'm going to keep it 100 and don't kill me for it but asians can be as racist to black people as whites. Never personally seen Asian community stand up when another race is being treated unfairly. It is my opinion the Asian community tries to assimilate more than any other group to white culture in America. Same ish goes on and is widely accepted in Asian countries where they still do black face and remove black actors from movie promotions. In America it's my opinion a lot of Asian women prefer to date strictly Asian or white men because that's the only thing culturally accepted. Crazy part is Asians and Africans have more in common culturally.

As an Asian, I feel like Asians are more ignorant than racist when it comes to race. Especially when I'm back in Taiwan they still say **** that wouldn't be accepted here but they're totally unaware they're racist remarks. Seeing a black person in Asia is pretty rare, and white celebrities are idolized so i know where you're coming from.

Speaking for myself, I relate to black culture the most as a minority.

Hip hop + booty + fried chicken + ball + black comedy = legit everything I need in life
