Black Culture Discussion Thread

Alotta folks just moved whatever they was doing from ATL to Houston…Just following the same cycle, couple more years ppl gonna be saying Houston “fell off” too…You can already feel n see it in the nightlife n prices compared to the pandemic n right after it

Interesting fact is DC had the highest population growth the last year…I’m sure a lot of em are the gentrifiers but still surprising to see given how the media says ppl are only moving to states like Texas and Florida and away from areas like DC

It definitely isn't "us" moving into the City.

Black folks with any bit of money are going down the Charles County these days.

IDK bruh, Houston damn near bullet proof. My cousins moved to Texas in 1995. I’ve been going there since 1997. My cousin graduated from TSU in 2005. I went to the campus barber and that was the first time a **** hit my line with a straight razor. I fell in love! I won’t even mention the women….

But there’s toooooo much money in Texas. Especially with the oil, livestock, engineering industry, etc. too many natural resources in that state for anyone to not thrive.

Lastly, there’s so much land. My cousin purchased a house in 2010 for 250k. Two stories, theatre, etc. She’s renting it out as of 2023 and they have another home in San Antonio.

Again, there’s just toooo much money in Houston IMO

I always preferred Houston to ATL honestly
I’m talking more about how Houston has been the new “poppin city” and where everybody moving and flocking to have a good time in the past decade, just like ATL was before it…It’s just starting to change and slow up the same way ATL is now, somewhere else gonna be the new it city soon but it’s always gonna be good down there

All the land getting further out from the city tho, nowhere is immune to the gentrification and increased cost of living…The places folks see on social media and hear about in the city are all expensive now

Yea it’s white folks and the youngins still partying that’s moving in as far as us…You know the joints in their 20’s gotta live the city life and be close to the mix :lol, met a couple of em recently moved to places like Navy Yard from TX, Cali, florida, GA

Everywhere is better when you're visiting. Also, that cheap cost of living trope is slowing dying in Houston.

Man, it’s expensive across everywhere in America. Ain’t no such thing as “cheap anymore”

Studios/one bedroom new apartments are going for $2800 minimum in Fort Lauderdale.

2-3 bedroom newer developments are no less than $3800

Again, I’ve loved Houston/Texas because I had visited damn near every summer since 1998. Damn near was going to move there with my aunts and cousins as a HS sophomore so, I can admit I’m biased. And y’all are well aware that I’m from South FL. I just always saw black folks flourishing there

ATL definitely like that too. Everybody I know that moved to Atlanta in past 5 -10 years, actually moved to the outskirts of Atlanta.

And to be totally honest. Houston now really doesn't hold a candle to them HoustonLantaVegas days. VLive didnt even have seats.

Houston has gotten a lot more expensive than when I lived there over a decade ago. It's still relatively cheaper than the DC area, but that doesn't mean much if you're a native Houstonian seeing the price hike. And those new build McMansions for 300K don't exist unless you're in a exurb.

Its still a great city for my tastes. if you want visible Black culture, diverse cultures and an active social scene for the Black professional crowd, it checks the boxes

Yeah I like D.C. on visits especially in the summer time. Since I live in Richmond it's not even that far of a commute. Me and the guys might get a ABNB and telly, set out locations to U street or DuPoint Circle on the dating apps a week out and already have moves lined up by the time we get there.

I couldn't live in D.C. though, too much going on. We just go there to party.

This guy gets it :hat :lol

Ain’t even know you were in the 804. That’s like another home for real. Me & frshstunna frshstunna be all up through there lol. Kabana, Bellos, Cities, Aces, Frozay etc. All through Shockoe bottom :lol. I feel like Richmond on the come up too.

But y’all playing DC the right way. I love to see it :smokin

Richmond definitely is way more jumping than people give it credit for.

Low COL. I split a 2bd 2 bath with my roommate for 1600 a month all inclusive. I only pay 800 a month for rent, utilities, wifi, and in unit washer/dryer. Right in the middle of downtown.

Manageable traffic, CRAZY good food scene with respectable prices, great parks. Honestly for me the ONLY downside is the lack of options in the Nightlife on occasion especially for black people. If you go out as much as I do you eventually run into the same people every week. I started hitting the Latin spots, a few breweries to keep it fresh..

You nailed it with Shockoe but they're really making an effort to dead almost ALL the majority black spots for night life. Cats don't know how to act and love taking out guns man :smh:. We finally had a place to go outside of Shockoe for a good year in a half when they turned the back of The Park into a club but of course negroes wanna fight and they shut that down.

Real ****. You sound like me and my *****s . We be on the same type of time :lol

That’s a good setup for real on the housing + commute. You really set yourself up to win when you can get those two things more than reasonable. Milk it for as long as you can, while racking up. I seen what’s going on in “Scott’s Addition” and some of those overpriced “luxury” appts they got over there

But They got some cool things to get into around there, and rent still below national average (went to this live 4th of July party at Bingo Beer for ABAC a while back, nothing but joints in there, those are the best moves). Richmond has come a long way on the nightlife man. We really some veterans :.lol

Ain’t know the 804 was in here. *****s Used to be out there in the early 2000s at teen clubs and ****. Alzenas and the other **** by VCU. Strib clubs on the Southside. Trying to see what’s up in mosby court :lol, Coming from Petersburg/Hopewell at that, to down there. ******s was adventurous, and there just really wasn’t much to do for black people out there. Especially young black folks, even the 21 up era.

It’s def more options now, and you can legit have some fun and not spend a crazy amount, but that element with *****s wilding still there for sure. Especially down shockoe. Was at liquid 2.0 on some after hours **** not too long ago, and saw same people + I see where the night was going. And damn, The park shut down? That was a gem. Thats the spot with the bowling alley? Ain’t no way. Went to a party there 2 years ago that was live as well. Peaceful great time. Think the same event.

Excerpt:

"Trump’s order calls the museum’s evolving approach a reconstruction of history that is “inherently racist, sexist, oppressive, or otherwise irredeemably flawed.”

“Once widely respected as a symbol of American excellence and a global icon of cultural achievement, the Smithsonian Institution has, in recent years, come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology,” the order says.

And it takes specific aim at one of the newest editions to the Smithsonian’s portfolio of 21 museums — the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2016 under the leadership of historian Lonnie G. Bunch III, who became its 14th and first African American secretary in 2019.

The order alleges that the museum “has proclaimed that ‘hard work,’ ‘individualism,’ and ‘the nuclear family’ are aspects of ‘White culture.’”

The Smithsonian is governed by a Board of Regents, which is made up of nine citizens, six members of Congress, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Vance.

Vance, the executive order states, will work with Trump’s executive staff “to effectuate the policies of this order through his role” and will work with Congress and the Office of Management and Budget to withhold funding for exhibits that he decides “degrade shared American values, divide Americans based on race.”"

I thought this was common knowledge about Pepsi lol

At least it is in the Carolinas. Old black people love Pepsi

Keep on coming down to the dirt, its about Coke. My grandmother would get upset if you bought some pepsi in her house. My pops used to work for Coke before the military.

I knew about the Pepsi preference (and putting peanuts inside the Pepsi bottle) based on observation alone.

Not about the ads, hiring and that their bottles were bigger

We a Pepsi family in here Fort Lauderdale:lol :lol

Part of me know its because Coca Cola was a big *** part of my city. BIG part.

I'm glad I didn't grow up around brand loyal type people. At least outwardly or being extra with it. Younger people usually went for Sprite and older folks Pepsi.

Reminds me of one box of cereal open at a time and no drinking while eating type families I only heard about later in life. I would have revolted under such nonsense. Rationing out $&@# like it's the great depression.

Man everyone’s kitchen was open sesame in my family. I don’t know how other people lived. Eat what you want!

My 6 year old neice be asking me to fix her stuff or get stuff out the pantry, like nah, gone in there and get it yourself!

I can walk in any of my aunts or uncles houses right now and grab whatever I want out the refrigerator

Reminds of this viral post. Seems like it was before 2024 :rollin :rollin

Almost a year to the day. One lil piece of rib not slab

Depending on the family member they would let you get a sip.

Especially people's relationship with spending on food or foodie gibberish. Gotta start asking about this family dynamic when it comes to dating.

Man my moms was letting me order steak and lobster at 9 years old, virgin pina coladas, etc, but I was a spoiled kid so, I know all situations were different. My parents worked DAMN hard though.

My mama would let me get some rib tips when I was 9 or 10 too. But that was from a restaurant.

At a BBQ in front of others? I knew the routine...chicken was the best option until 13-14.
