Black Culture Discussion Thread

I originally said move on because I wasn't sure how open you would be to the conversation seeing you have a white wife.

Usually, these convos turn into those with non-black wives getting defensive.

But if you are open to a convo about it, cool.

We can start here.

Thoughts on what he is saying about it being a political statement.

Please don't bring up anything about his school, comments about LGBTQ, etc.

I've seen that Umar video before. For me it's always been about doing the work, regardless of the race of your spouse. Like Umar mentions himself, leaders from the past like Harry Belafonte and current leaders like Byron Allen have white wives. It doesn't diminish they work they do and, on the flip side, there are plenty of people with black spouses who have internalized racism and don't contribute anything. You can't judge on face value alone.

It's like Andre 3000 says:

"Now question: is every ***** with dreads for the cause?
Is every ***** with golds for the fall? Naw
So don't get caught up in appearance
It's OutKast, Aquemini, another black experience"

Regarding income: I guess when I'm dead my mix-race kids and my (hopefully) elderly wife will inherit my meager earning. Oh well 🤷🏿‍♂️ lol

Well, I am not of the belief a person is 100 or 0 when it comes to the fight.

A black man with a white wife CAN be down for the cause.
A black woman with a black husband doesn't necessarily have to be down for the cause.

There is nuance.

I was simply discussing why you felt marriage wasn't a political statement/move.

Nothing more than that.

So that is my question

I chose to marry the person who I love and I'm the most compatible with. Nothing political about it.

So as I said, the hang up stems from you not believing marriage (in any form) is in fact a political statement.

I definitely think it can be but I don't think it is for everyone. I already said that I know of black men who view white women as a status symbol.

Nah, I am saying the ACT of marriage (no matter WHO you marry) is a political move. (As well as economical/social/spiritual/emotional)

So anyone that signs that dotted line is making a political statement period.

I don't agree with this. People can't control how others perceive marriage (if you think every marriage is a political act, that's on you).

So what makes something political to you?

Would you consider acts like Which school you enroll your child or Which neighborhood you decide to live in political or not?

For me, political acts are determined by political intent. For example, the vast majority of people in America live less than 20 mi from the spot they were born, I don't think where they live is political for them. The vast majority of people go to public schools in the neighborhood they were born in, the schools they choose to go to on a political act for them.

Are there people for whom where they choose to live, who they choose to marry and the school they go to are political decisions? Of course but I don't think these decisions are based on politics for the vast majority of people. These decisions are not inherently political to me. Just my opinion.

A black man can’t be pro-black and marry a non-black woman. It’s that simple guys

My boy married his Hispanic girlfriend and they have been together since they are 18, I’m not expecting him to divorce or anything and it’s who he love and build his life with. No problem with that, however you cannot be “pro-black” and not be with a black woman. You can still be a good guy and an awesome person, but to be about your race you can’t be building a life with non black woman and say ur down for the cause.

Being pro black isn't strictly about doing the work?

Also, if you're black and you choose never to get married and have children, can you be pro black?

Here u go w/ this bull**** again. What type of hispanic is homeboy's girlfriend?

NO. If u have to pick between marrying Candace Owens & Natalie Portman in order to be pro-black then you better pick Candace Owen's. Otherwise you can't be black, a respectable black, and damn sure not pro-black.

Pro-black means to put your people first, and one of the most important decisions a man is to make in his life is to select a woman to build with, if you go out your way to select a woman who isn’t black then how are you putting your people first?

anyway fellas, y’all have a great night. ✊🏿

Black people mistake others as they people based solely on dark skin. That is faulty and ignores the vast amount of cultural differences black ppl have. There is too much cultural diversity among black people to join along such a common trait.

Running the risk of sounding "all lives matter", but being pro black has nothing to do with putting black people "first". Benjamin "****" Carson has a black wife.

Jesus Christ.

did I say “if you marry a black woman that automatically makes you pro-black”

please read what I said again.

Only if you're a king and trying to grow your influence/territory. That **** is optional for commoners.

for me if you side with dismantling white supremacy and want to see black people thrive in a world unencumbered by their race, then youre pro black. any other qualifiers can be individually self imposed but has zero weight on another black persons value to making the world a better place for other black people. some people, the most pro-black thing theyll do is marry another black person and raise a family, for others itll be activism, for others itll be scholarship, finance, and so on and so forth. the list can literally go on and on. thats just me though, im not in the business of turning away allies and accomplices. white supremacy is a beast that gonna take numbers to defeat.
