Father Sues Child Protective Services for ‘Kidnapping’ His Kids As Black Children Are Disproportionately Placed In Foster Care

Black children are placed in foster care and separated from their parents far more often than white children, reflecting a racial disparity in the system that some Black parents are attempting to remedy. A civil rights case recently filed in Minnesota by a Black father who alleges the state kidnapped his children and placed them in foster care shines a light on the scope of what has emerged as a national problem.

NAACP And Black Bikers Are Suing Myrtle Beach For Discrimination Suffered During Black Bike Week
Restrictions during Black Bike Week made the plaintiffs feel "humiliated."

The NAACP is spearheading a lawsuit against Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for discrimination against Black Bike Week attendees.

The civil rights organization, along with Cedric and Leslie Stevenson and Simuel Jones, filed the suit to protest unfair traffic restrictions placed on Black Bike Week, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Black Bike Week occurs every Memorial Day weekend, and during that time, Oceanside Drive, a frequent spot for black bikers, is placed under a 23-mile traffic loop that can take up to six hours to complete. After being caught in the loop for hours in 2016, the Stevens restricted themselves to activities within walking distance to avoid leaving Leslie’s mother, who was traveling with them, alone for an extended period. According to the lawsuit, the restrictions made them feel “humiliated and frustrated.”

Harley Week, a predominately white event, occurs a few weeks before Black Bike Week and is not placed under the same restrictions.

The NAACP also conducted a study that found businesses close or charge higher prices during Black Bike Week. Additionally, the city imports hundreds of police officers from across the state to patrol the event.

“So you have a situation where you have a strong police presence at a large black event and with that comes more stops, more arrests, more harassment,” Anson Asaka, associate general counsel of the NAACP, said.

This is the second time the NAACP has sued Myrtle Beach over this issue. The first lawsuit occurred in 2003 and resulted in the city being required to subject both events to the same plan. That requirement expired in 2015.

Suicide Rates for Black Children Twice That of White Children, New Data Show

African American children are taking their lives at roughly twice the rate of their white counterparts, according to a new study that shows a widening gap between the two groups.

The 2001-2015 data, published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, confirm a pattern first identified several years ago when researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio found that the rate of suicides for black children ages 5 to 12 exceeded that of young whites. The results were seen in both boys and girls.

Although suicide is rare among young children, the latest findings reinforce the need for better research into the racial disparities, lead author Jeffrey Bridge said Monday. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for older children and adolescents in the United States.

“We can’t assume any longer that suicide rates are uniformly higher in white individuals than black,” said Bridge, an epidemiologist who directs the Center for Suicide Prevention and Research at the Columbus hospital. “There is this age-related disparity, and now we have to understand the underlying reasons. … Most of the previous research has largely concerned white suicide. So we don’t even know if the same risk and protective factors apply to black youth.”

Historically, suicide rates in the United States have been higher for whites than blacks across all age groups. That remains the case for adolescents, ages 13 to 17, according to the new study. White teens continue to have a 50 percent higher rate of suicide than black teens.

Overall between 1999 and 2015, more than 1,300 children ages 5 to 12 took their own lives in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those numbers translate into an average of one child 12 or younger dying by suicide every five days. The pace has actually accelerated in recent years, CDC statistics indicate.

The researchers based their latest analysis on the CDC's Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System, which does not include geographical or socioeconomic data.

Although the study was unable to provide a cultural context for the racial difference in suicide rates, psychiatrist Samoon Ahmad thinks a number of reasons could account for the disparity.

“To me, the 5-12 range is more related to developmental issues and the possible lack of a family network, social network and cultural activities,” said Ahmad, a clinical associate professor at the NYU School of Medicine who was not involved in the research. “And with the introduction of social media, there is more isolation with children, not as much neighborhood play. Kids are more socially in their own vacuum.”

Ahmad described this age group as “probably the most vulnerable.” Yet adults tend to think the children are somehow too young to experience such depths of despair, he noted.

“No one talks about that with them. We tend to put them in silos, and don’t discuss these things because we think it’s too traumatic,” he said. “Instead, there must be a slow and steady flow of communication.”

Previous studies have looked at some of the characteristics and circumstances surrounding children's suicides.

In 2017, research by Bridge and colleagues found that among children, ages 5 to 11, and young adolescents, ages 12 to 14, those who took their own lives were more likely to be male, African American and dealing with stressful relationships at home or with friends. Children who had a mental health problem at the time of death were more likely than young adolescents to have been diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Young adolescents who killed themselves were more likely to have had relationship problems with a boyfriend or girlfriend. They also had higher rates of depression, according to last year's study, which was published in the journal Pediatrics.

That 2017 report found more than a third of elementary school-aged suicides involved black children compared to just 11.6 percent of early adolescent suicides.

Bridge said his motivation for delving into this issue was a suicide in a town not far from Columbus. The child was not yet 10.

“We went into the original study because suicide rates were increasing among adolescents in the United States,” Bridge said. The local death “made us think if there was a change in the suicide rate of children, and that’s what made us look into it.”

I thought the bombs sent in the Philly block back in the 80s was crazy... Tulsa was somethin else

"The city government of Tulsa conspired with the mob, arresting more than 6,000 black residents and refusing to provide them with protection or assistance.[11] Law enforcement officials used airplanes to drop firebombs on buildings, homes, and fleeing families, stating they were protecting against a "Negro uprising." "

People look at me weird when I say bein white is pretty embarrassing but like... Cuz **** like that, man. Columbus... All that

‘Other Than Her Mouth, There are No Weapons’: White Man Who Called the Police on Golfing Black Women Said He’s Not Racist ( :rolleyes )
Steve Chronister called the police twice that day.

Recently released 911 calls from a golf course in Pennsylvania reveal that the white man who called the cops on golfing Black women told the dispatcher he was not racist.

Steve Chronister called the police twice in April of this year on five Black women whose only “offense” was golfing too slowly on the golf course. The dispatcher was understandably incredulous as to why Chronister was calling the police on five unarmed women at a golf course.

“Other than her mouth, there are no weapons,” he said. When he called the police a second time, he made sure to let the dispatcher know that he was not racist despite what the women were saying to him.

We have a tough situation here with a group of golfers that decide they don’t want to abide by the rules, said Chronister. “We’re not being racist. We’re being golf course management that has to have play moving a certain way.”

Sandra Thompson, Myneca Ojo, Sandra Harrison, Carolyn Dow, and Karen Crosby were the women in question and said they were rattled by the experience.

“It was like we were playing with targets on our backs,’ said Harrison at the time of the incident. ‘What other reason could there be other than we were guilty of being Black while golfing?”

Chronister, a former York County Commissioner, owns the golf club. His son Jordan and daughter-in-law JJ manage it.

An Apology

JJ Chronister, the wife of Chronister and co-owner of the club, says she wants to make amends with the women and meet with them and to personally apologize.

“We sincerely apologize to the women for making them feel uncomfortable here at Grandview, that is not our intention in any way,” she told the newspaper.

“We want all of our members to feel valued and that they can come out here and have a great time, play golf and enjoy the experience.”

Thompson said she’s unsure if there needs to be a meeting when there’s a larger racial issue that needs to be addressed.

“There needs to be something more substantial to understand they don’t treat people in this manner,” she said.

 That diet + manual labor.

I didn't know that wrestling was the #1 professional sport in Senegal though. That was a pleasant surprise.

Yea man, I thought it was football throughout Africa. I actually got put on through a music video by Viviane Ndour, a senegalese singer. Her love interest in the video was a wrestler so i looked it up cuz we dont got that in Guinea.

The music video was dope, it showed the build up to the event and its kinda like a tailgate leading to a football game over here except no alcohol cuz their muslim but shenanigans ensue.

Theres actually a wrestling subculture there.
