I really hate the evolution of the rules of basketball. he legit took 3 steps starting with his gather into the 1 legged pump fake.
My one gripe with 1 v1 scene and the step they take off of a pivot.

with that initial step he hadn’t ended the dribble yet, then gathers while still on that foot & takes his 2 steps…i’d say it’s more of a clarification than evolution, in the vid below @ around the 6:50 it’s described as 1 1/2 steps, which is vague because what is a half step?

what rules set do you think most folk play by? most folk playing pickup aren’t that familiar with either high school or fiba/nba rules 
in the same run you’ll have man that will do a peak harden’esque step back (technically illegal by high school rules) & no one really blinks an eye but argue/complain about the gathers or slow steps similarly if man shoots an airball & gets his own rebound & continues to dribble folks in most runs will call travel (but this is legal by high school & i think international rules) but a travel in the association 
… folk just pick & choose by what looks unconventional/weird to them & not by a single set of rules, just would make way more sense to unify & play by the most ubiquitous rule set which is fiba/nba

Like I said agree to disagree no idea where you run at but round my way ain’t nobody going for a step through like that at the very least it’s check up rather then a turnover.
The time stamp referenced was not a great example bc Jim Barnett ain’t doing nothing like the short posted and I live where he played professsionally

If you want to embellish when that first step occurred that’s on you. Rebounding your own airball then dribbling is a turnover round my way in pickup and high school .
When I was coming up we had a shot clock. Did y'all?

i agree… most times this is kinda irrelevant but if someone does anything that’s unconventional a lot of the time it’s going to be an argument because folks have no idea what rules they are playing by it’s a hodgepodge of pro, highschool, & arbitrary personal interpretation(s)…that folk don’t like the pro rules or think something looks funny doesn’t make it an illegal move/play but yea i don’t necessarily recommend using these type of moves without giving a short presentation/seminar on the gather step before the run

That goofball NBA gather step foolishness ain't flying in no pickup games man. The NBA rules definitely aren't what's used in most games outside the NBA.

so are you saying it ALWAYS is called ahht? do you think this is typical for the general run these days? what i’m trying to point out is that aside from it being an only nba legal move (why should anyone that is not in the nba or playing by rules that aren’t nba rules even think to use that move?), is that folk are more ‘comfortable’ with that gather move now as it has become more familiar…fact is significant amount of people think a basic step through is travelling likely because it has kinda fallen ahht of practice…so i don't think it’s about the way the gather is called in nba being ‘goofy’ really, it’s just that a lot of folk (not saying that this is universal) really just aren’t familiar and/or don’t know/understand the rules…a player delaying when they pick up/stop their dribble is just good gamesmanship

Anytime I've seen the "Harden Stepback" done in a pickup game it was called.
Not sure what happens everywhere but anytime I've seen it, it has been called.
From my personal experience, HS/NCAA rules are more in line with how the pickup game is governed more than the NBA rulebook.
The NBA gather step is goofy because fundamentally it is an excuse to travel. I understand what it is and what purpose it serves. (To generate points, make the game mote offensively one sided, to generate fan appreciation).
Same as palming and any other violation the NBA allows players to do today that they didn't allow in the past.
It's all goofy.

definitely a travel, hand underneath the pill…refs not going to catch every infraction
