I don't know why looking at this basketball reminded me of this from my days doing scoring and timing for youth rec league in high school. I did the 14-17 age bracket (boys and girls). One of the quirks of the league is that if one team preferred playing with a rubber ball, the game had to be played with a rubber ball. There was ONE team in the league that played with a rubber ball, and it drove opposing coaches MAD lol. Sometimes, the opposing coach wouldn't notice until the opening tip and they'd throw a fit. The refs would have to explain that was the rule. I saw coaches get tee'd up arguing over it. It was definitely a competitive advantage, but it was basically just exploiting a rule.
