Basketball Thread About Nothing

Dope times even during an L 😂

I was up by the roof that day

Saturday afternoons in the ACC were great back then

Bring back the raycom sports era lol
I was a student and it was probably the one game that I really wanted to get in line early for.

Miss those days

I didn't get a single free big game ticket when I was there lol

ERC legend (in my mind lol) during my time there

Just waiting to ref my first game. I haven’t been this nervous in a long time.

Got my Monarch’s on though so at least I look the part.

Game over - think I managed to hide the fact that it was my first. No complaints anyway - other than the scrappy PG complaining about an offensive foul which I thought was pretty egregious.

The guy I was with was great - young guy but really experienced and learned a lot.

He introduced himself and said he didn’t think we’d worked together before - “Do you want to know the really bad news?”

Helps that it was a blowout so there wasn’t much pressure.

That’s awesome! How long did you train/learn? What level of bball is it?

Started last fall really. Just emailed the national body and said how do I start? - they had a course that was pretty basic but once you’ve got the certificate you can get in the booking system. Spent a lot of time studying on my own and I’ve passed the test you need for higher levels - in mock tests.

Basketball isn’t huge here but there are clubs around and schools and college and rec league too - I can’t get the rec league guy to reply to me (but the guy today said he can sort that) so just picked an u16 club game for my first one. Next weekend is U14 then U16 - both girls.

Next step is some experience then there’s a guy who can help you progress - I want to try and get my level 2 certificate next year so I can get to men’s division 1. The guy I was with today is level 4 so he does the top flight national stuff and the big college games.

Last stage after that is FIBA so you can go to European top level and the olympics and stuff. Brisbane in 7 years is what I’m aiming for!

The standard today was pretty poor though - like I said this was under 16s and it was also a lower ranked team against the second team from a bigger club. I’m pretty sure I could have scored 20 and I’m old and busted.

I watched the first half of the game after which was under 18s of the same clubs - and it was a lot better. Tied game at the half too - in the earlier one it was something like 50-20.

My thinking behind doing this right though is to turn up and treat this like a top level game - not in calling pernickety stuff but in being sharp and making the game go well for the kids. I just think it makes it enjoyable doing things well.
