Co-sign @rrlegend  and keep in mind that out of all that, the mattress is the most important on that list.  Everyone has different preferences but go check them out, IMO it's tough to find anything comfortable under $1k but keep in mind you can negotiate mattress prices, price match or do whatever to make sure you don't pay the extremely high markups on mattresses.

To add to this a mattress and a good looking sofa should be where most of your bread should go.

Alright alright I'm bugging when it comes to
That 1k.

Let me break it down. I say about:
500 for a TV
1500 for bedroom set + mattress
1500 for living room set including sectional sofa

So 3500 ?

I'm not too concerned about the furnishing right now. More concerned about how many months rent I should have saved up before I make that step.

Is 5-6 months adequate?

(Thanks for the input btw @Wj4 @scarsorscabs @rrlegend)
No dining table and dishes? I understand you are single, but at least get something in that dept.

For me, mattress is pretty important..I'll drop a bit more for a higher quality one.

I'm not sure what your job entails. If it's an entry level position, I guess 6 months' pay is adequate. But if your job is a higher tier, which means harder to come by, I would do a year at the minimum. But this is of course preference.

You spend 33% of your life on a bed. Don't skimp here.

If you have a job and moving across town I say 3 months rent honestly . If you moving to a new city or cross country 6 months rent.

Also with that budget for furnishing it's gonna get u the bare basics . You'll do good at ikea or cl with it though . You might be able to furnish your whole crib for 2500 off of craigslist since people get would rather get something than nothing.
Agreed. It gets real when you're in a new city far from home by yourself. You can't go back to the crib or crash at your friends' places. You need more buffer at that point and hope the worst doesn't happen.

don't underestimate how much furnishing cost. One year later and I still need things here and there.

I'd say purchase little by little instead of all at once. My first sofa I put on layaway till I could pay it off. Took 5 months.

Figure out what you need now. For instance, if you entertain a lot a sofa and/or dining room set might be a priority.

Dishes and towels you can get from amazon, kohls, tj maxxx , Ross and Burlington . Dining room set your gonna have to shop around for till you find something you see that will hold you over for a couple years same with sofa. Mattress shop around for , bed can be bought at ikea but be forewarned they fall apart after about a year or two quicker depending on the amount of tail you get. I don't know your style but the houzz app can give you good ideas on arranging your place and apartment therapy does the same as well. Also I use gilt home for knick knacks like lamps, side tables, art , and some linens . I've been in my place for 6 months now and it's not nearly what I want but it's getting there week by week and tweak be tweak.

When I moved I bought little by little. Started off with a couch, tv and bedroom seat and gradually started adding more furniture. I didn't buy a dining table until a year later :lol thinking about it now...I don't eem use it smh

How much am I looking at for a billiard table/dining table? Over/under 3 grand?

For a brand new, decent, large size... maybe. $3K still seems a little steep. I would imagine they'd be half that.

I almost bought a 7' dining pool table for my apt. Saw a decent one for as little as $400 at a pawn shop type of place.

Okay cool... really loving something like this for downstairs. With white felt to match my cabinets.

The more the better but 3 months in savings for rent + all [essential] bills is a nice buffer. Also, you do not have to fully furnish your spot all at once but I suggest getting a solid start. Make it feel like a home and not just a spot where you eat, sleep, crap, and smash. Don't be one of those guys that has a bedroom with nothing but a mattress on the ground... Here is how I started out:

Sectional sofa - $700
TV stand - 250 (was using my 32" tv from college for a couple months then got a 50")
Coffee table + two end tables - 200 (on sale, looks great though)
Mattress + Box spring - 700
Bedroom set (Bed frame w/ headboard, dresser w/ mirror, 2 night stands) - 1300
Lamps, pictures, little art pieces - $100 (Homegoods Store has a lot of great stuff like this for the low)

I got my living room and bedroom sets from Value City and Marlo Furniture. Nothing fancy but they have some good looking stuff and decent sales. Everything is holding up nice but don't make the mistake of habitually sleeping on the couch. Cushions will wear down before you know it.

I never bought anything off CL but my cousin has a really nice place and did a majority of her shopping on there. She lives in a nicer area though so that might be a factor too.

Get your emergency fund set before anything but do not neglect furnishing your place. Lastly, try to envision your space before you start buying. You might like different pieces of furniture but it might not "flow" once you put it together.

When I moved I bought little by little. Started off with a couch, tv and bedroom seat and gradually started adding more furniture. I didn't buy a dining table until a year later :lol thinking about it now...I don't eem use it smh
Funny you say this. I actually sold my dining room table + chairs a couple weeks ago because I never used it in the 1.5 years I've had my apt. Plus it took up a lot of space. Now I am looking for either a smaller 2 person table or a bar/pub table + stools. Its not like I host large dinner parties or anything so just want something for me and my girl.

Turned my dining area into my office space and slowly but surely get that setup. May post again for advice on how to hide the wires.

:hat thanks y'all

All the talk about mattresses..all facts
If I can go back in time I wish I would've bought a matter mattress. I bought an ikea mattress on sale for 200, had it for a year and my back started hurting :lol had to drop 150 for a mattress topper. Throwing that whole joint out as soon as I move

A nice mattress pad can make up for a so so mattress too. Remember that if trying to stay under budget

I know nothing about mattresses but the first brands to pop out of my mouth are Sealy, Serta, and Tempurpedic

I assume that a good amount of you guys are renting your current spot. Do y'all feel any type of way towards throwing a lot of money into furnishing a place that technically you don't own?

is there such thing as a wooden desk for around $300? ive looked everywhere for a desk with a couple drawers and wood. everything is either the walmart type plywood desk or incredibly expensive! im lost! can anyone help?

Just build piece by piece, don't have to cop the furniture all at once. You get some accidental style that way too.

Been furnishing and shopping for stuff for my new place, need 3-4 TV's. been looking at the Samsung 4k joints. Saw that new curve the other day and feel in love. Probably putting a 75" in the living room, then a 55 in the basement and maybe my room. At first I was thinking against a tv in my room, but someday might feel in the mood to just lay in bed and watch movies or whatever. Then thinking of putting up a smaller one on the wall of the breakfast nook for when I want to watch the news in the morning or whatever.

Aside from TV's, going to order the living room, dining room and basement furniture this even. Real comfortable stuff. I tried not to get too contemporary and artsy with the flavor, and opted more for eye pleasing and feel, especially for when the ladies come through. Marble dining set (seats 8) and coffee table and server/wine rack. Should be a dope look. Still want to buy a new stove, fridge and washer and dryer. Comes with those pieces, but I want lighter ones since my kitchen is lighter cream colored. Still need to look for furniture for the breakfast area. And then shelves for my shoes since I'm turning the entire 2nd bedroom into a closet. I want a smaller medium sized dresser, that hopefully matches the dresser I already have to put in the walk-in closet in the master bedroom. It's like 9' deep and 5' wide, so I can put one on the back wall area. I need some more art too. I have some great stuff, but want some random stuff too, banksy, warhol, dali, klimt, etc. Wanted a kaws bear or two to place randomly. Something fun. IDK. Found some dope stuff for my spot in Florida. There it's ultra artsy and deco, so much less comfort and much more conversation starter pieces and furniture.

While 3 months of rent is def. suggested and 6 months is highly preferred, I've moved into a new place w/ the security deposit, 1st months rent and enough money for a weeks food after I graduated school and it worked. (I had no choice, they told me I needed to start work and it was 800 miles from home and I had no friends. I had no job prospects at home so it was either be broke w/ my parents or be potentially broke/potentially financially fine in a new state). If you are going to do something crazy like that make sure you will like the job b/c w/ no money you can't quit. I was an intern, so I knew what what I was getting myself into. And make sure they wont fire you. I had a contract w/ the gov't so it worked out.

In short, it really depends on your job.

For the first 2 weeks until I got paid I slept on an air mattress, Got a $40.00 lazy-boy off craigslist, Had an old tv. Literally all my furniture for 2 weeks. Good times :lol

this x 1000000. Live within your means. Don't have Champagne taste and beer money. Watch for finances. Be mindful of your credit usage. Do what you can, when you can. And just keep eying the future. No matter your current situation and living arrangement, keep working hard and believe it will get better. Then just grind it out. Trust me.

I was looking at a few 4Ks at RC Willey and felt like pulling the trigger... but after research, I figured it wasn't worth it.

I think i'll just buy an 80" and put my current 65" upstairs in my loft.
