Living in Atlanta for a few years I've been to a couple of Hawks' games and aside from when the Hawks play marquee teams Phillips Arena has a lot of empty seats.

As already mentioned the sports teams as whole in Atlanta don't have a strong fanbase like say Chicago or New York.

i always have a good time at hawks games. went to wizards (john wall first game), clippers, bulls, and thunder this year.

josh smith is someone i recommend seein in person (pause)

Out of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana:

Charlotte, ATL, Tennessee, New Orleans (DC if you want to use that for Virginia's metro) are the ONLY areas with pro sports.  Florida doesn't count.  Every one of those states has two or more college football stadiums or basketball arenas that are as big as a pro arena and the fans typically have more passion about the college programs.  With college sports, you can actually directly pay a player's salary and feel like you contributed to the team.

just out of curiousity..why do FL dont count?

The two answers to OP's question have been provided. (1) Atlanta is a city filled with transplants, which equals people who aren't attached to our teams or bandwagoners. (2) Atlanta isn't a great sports city. Since the Olympics came in 1996, the city has a lot to offer than pre-1996.

I'm a diehard fan for my Atlanta teams and it won't change, but outside of the diehard fans most people in Atlanta are bandwagoners or people just at the games to be seen. Hell, I doubt any black people in the city know that we have 4 black players on our hockey team.

Because Florida has teams and is still widely considered the worse state for pro sports bar none.

Damn, that was a good one.

I caught this when I watched them play the Knicks the other day; every time the Knicks made a shot there was a loud %*% cheer, when they missed you could hear the "Aww" of disappointment

It was louder than the Hawks' fans reactions. If I hadn't been looking at the tv I would have thought it was at MSG.

Good observation. It's beeen this way for as long as I can remember. If you wanna go deeper without getting controversial, I've also noticed that the majority of white sports fans in this region disregard pro sports even more so than their minority counterparts do here in the South. Much of it I feel is attributed to the already blatant and ugly racism that has notoriously plagued this region forever
embarassed.gif

Let's be honest, I'm sure it infuriates southern whites (who are racist) to see young, black, and talented millionaires that their daughters wanna be with and their sons wanna be like

No doubt racism can be looked at as an underlying issue in the south but there are plenty of white fans supporting black college athletes, buying their jerseys and all that.  Besides, even the Braves didn't have GREAT support during their heyday, it's a lot of fairweather pro sports fans in the south.  Meanwhile, they'll stick by and watch their college teams with a lot more passion.  I think weather plays a part in that it's easier to support these college teams year round, tailgate all day and since there are so fewer pro teams, they pour their money into going to see the colleges.

I said Florida doesn't count because there are so many more professional teams in all sports, A LOT of transplants from other parts of the US too.

I don't disagree with that assessment but there are more than enough Black people with money to fill up the GA Dome and Philips on any given night so its not really a reason why the fan base is trash.

Exactly

Atlanta having a being a bad Sports town has more to do with the city being full of transplants and the teams being historically bad
