Asian Culture Discussion Thread

I didn't understand the cultural controversy that saw him ran off social media very well. Anyone able to provide nuance to his criticism of the use of blackface he made? Or was he condemned for something else?

The summary:

he posted a photo of high school students black facing (or cosplaying however you see it) the African funeral song that went viral few years ago

unnamed.jpg

And he called them out by reposting it on his Instagram saying black facing is wrong.

He got backlash for a few reasons

1. Posting photos of minors on his own page, Korean law is very serious about posting strangers faces without their consent

2. He did the slanted eye thing few years back so he was called out for being a hypocrite. Koreans argued that the kids were cosplaying a meme while Sam was deliberately doing a racial stereotypical gesture

unnamed (1).jpg

And then after that he took a photo with a Korean actress responding to a sexual remark on a married woman

unnamed (2).jpg

The caption of the photo was "sister, we look like orange caramel"

But what was inappropriate was how he responded to a comment where someone wrote "once you go black you never go back"

And he responded inappropriately by saying "preach!".

Koreans saw that as a disrespectful sexual remark on a married woman who was his colleague for a gig. Even more so weird calling her "sister" and then responding to a sexual remark.

Dude absolutely was in the right calling blackface out even if the originators thought it was cool. Maybe the kids didn't know any better, but it was still a teaching moment, and really sad to see people more mad at him about posting the picture itself.

everyone in that exchange is outta pocket.. from the teens painting their faces to him doing the slanted eye gesture. all around dumbness.

i gotta say tho, that cardboard coffin is ******* A-1 .. costume set up wouldve been brilliant sans the blackface

Thanks all for the info! I agree it could have been a teachable moment for everyone involved, but it looks like it was missed when everyone dug into their respective positions.

Sometimes I wish the internet isn't as fast as it is so there was time to think about how to approach things. I know I need time to process some situations before speaking on them.

Also was not aware of how strict they are with photographs of minors in SK. Wish we had more of that in the US.

Why’s you make this thread huh pal?

Attacks on asian people should not mixed in with Asian culture.
Even though these attacks affects how asians sees themselves in the grander scheme, it would be weird addressing a serious matter like an attack alongside the new Blackpink music video.

I'm sure they have little certain parts or adlibs prerecorded and are accusing em of lip syncing due to that. These probably the same people who get mad at sampling in music :lol
