I don't know or care about Ninjahood's situation and financial status but you're most definitely wrong about rent-controlled apartments, they are not determined by income or wealth. There isn't a huge number of examples of people paying well-below what they can afford relative to the amount of apartments in NY but there definitely are enough. Aside from unhappy landlords who have to maintain adequate living conditions despite the below market rents, there's no reason for these people to give them up. The article you linked even gives an example of it...someone who also OWNS property in the Hamptons.

This was my point. I understand that people need it, and certainly there are caveats to the argument, but I just didn't see that consistency in his argument.
