Is "our" value system askew, or is it the general human's value system? Think about this: teachers teach education, but not education that matters. We learn things that have next to no meaning in life for a high percentage of the population. Apart from reading, writing and conversing, what do we learn in our first 21 years that really matters? Advanced physics, calculus, english thesis constructions, does any of that really matter in the real world? I say real world as in the actual world, not the system of employment and government and money. That world is a product of this education we are being fed. Back in the old age, there was no need for all this BS. Now, we learn stuff with next to no importance just so we can get into a good college and then there learn about jobs that half the people don't even want to do.Originally Posted by SiMPLYDiMPLY
yeah but what i am saying is our value system is totally askew. what positivity does an athlete bring to the world. little to none. people sell themselves as commodities and instead of improving the human condition they just buy into this idiocy.Originally Posted by Cronicmolemolereturns

Teachers don't have sponsors and sell products. To make it into the Major Leagues you have to be the best in the country basically you don't have to be to be a teacher.
Now compare this to the professional athlete: they represent dreams for so many kids. It's not even just about baseball, or basketball, or football, but it's that they're there for kids to dream and to believe that they can be anything they want in life. Teachers, and education, on the other hand, force books and redundant knowledge upon us with no actual meaning. I'm not talking down on teachers or the education system, but that's the reality. What we learn now is only to prepare us for a life which is a result of human progress. Life isn't even about chasing your dreams anymore, it's about following the rat race and making the most money. Everyone around you just cares about getting to the next level and making more money so they can buy more items. And what do colleges look for? The kid with the best grades. And that's all kids in high school care about (if they care about anything). Grades, GPA, AP/honors classes, I never hear anyone around me talking about how they want to be a professional athlete or how they want to be a singer or an astronaut or whatever they wanted to do as kids. They're all the same, near copies of one another, just people who want the numbers, the recognition and the twisted future that comes from it.
No flame though, just my thoughts on education/life nowadays.
