Like someone else mentioned, you get to a certain age and stop worrying about what others think of how you dress.
Personally, I'm 32. Wife, kids, mortgage, real job; basically, I'm an adult. At my job, I supervise a small team (3 people, including one guy I hired from NT) and I wear sneakers, jeans, and a polo. Most of time it's roshe runs or grey new balance 99x, but I occasionally wear Jordan's, air maxes, etc because I like them.
I would venture to say dudes that "grow out" of wearing sneakers weren't really into sneakers, and it was just a phase.
When I'm 60, I'll still be wearing sneakers.
