I'm afraid of people I love dying.
nope... actually i hope i die before my parents do because i would hate to see them die...
I don't believe there is a rational, sane human being who is not scared to die. If the grim reaper came up to you and said "this is where your life ends" I can guarantee you would crap your pants and beg for your life because in some way everybody knows this one shot to be on this Earth is all there is. Fear of death is what makes you look both ways before crossing the street, it's what keeps cancer patients fighting for a chance to continue living, it's what tells police/military to wear flaks and carry firearms. If you truly do not fear death then I challenge you to live without regard for your safety, health, or general well being and see how far you make it. Being scared of dying is what let's me know I'm not crazy.

hmmm...no. There is a difference between rational fear of something you can control and irrational fear of something you cannot. I'm not afraid to die. It is something that is guaranteed to happen. Doesn't mean I am going to aid in my passing by being a jackass. Self preservation is an instinct in all of us. Has nothing to do with the here after. Has more to do with the here and now. No body fears dying of old age b.
I'm terrified of death. Death itself. The when doesn't matter that much to me and I really don't care how I die.
I don't think anyone is really scared of death itself...
Like most have already touched upon, it's all the stuff that surrounds it which we fear... getting ill and being in agonizing pain, a gruesome, grizzly accident, dying young without realizing our dreams, the emotional pain of leaving behind loved ones and them leaving us behind... etc.
If someone could promise that every single one of us were GUARANTEED to live out a great, happy life to 120 yrs old and die peacefully in our sleep without one moment of pain, we wouldn't sweat it.
It's the not knowing when or how it's gonna come...
THAT'S what scares us.
I think my point went over your head.
I'm terrified of death. Death itself. The when doesn't matter that much to me and I really don't care how I die.
But death itself, the end of my existence, is the scariest thing I can think of.@ fearing pain but not death.
Pain is momentary. Death is eternal.
Your point was that we don't fear death itself but merely the how and its effects on others.I think my point went over your head.

So why are you scared for the end of your existence?
I hear ya, although I personally would have included that in the "other stuff" ...it's the feeling that you're missing out on things that scares you. But that scares me (and I would think most people) all the time now anyway. We'd all like more time to do and experience as much as possible for as long as possible.

I don't care about the how or any of that other stuff because I'll be dead so it won't matter.
I care about no longer existing because to no longer be able to enjoy all that life has to offer scares me.
To not even be able to laugh, or feel a breeze on my skin, the touch of a woman, hear the sound of music.... it's unthinkable to me.
The feeling of the sun on my skin, air as it enters my lungs, the taste of an apple, all the little things that we take for granted.
**** I could go without everything I just listed as long as I could still think and exist. I only fear death because as far as I know it's the end of me.
If I knew there was an afterlife or that my consciousness would continue to exist after I was gone I wouldn't even stress death.
Yeah either way we're ******. Not existing will suck but existing forever will be horrible once you're the only thing left.I hear ya, although I personally would have included that in the "other stuff" ...it's the feeling that you're missing out on things that scares you. But eternal life would be pretty boring no? What you gonna do when the earth dies, then the solar system, all the Galaxies, Super Clusters etc..
You're just going to be a consciousness floating around in space
