Anyone here attend University of Oklahoma or University of Houston?

Went to UH... don't go to UH for UH... go to UH for the city of Houston.

It's a commuter school, like Mister Friendly said you don't get the college experience unless you really try hard to...

banned me for 1yr over a +@!@%!@ fried chicken joke. But yea this is me.

What in particular do you want to know?

I actually don't live in OKC though I'm there multiple times a week because I have Thunder season tickets. I live 80 miles south in Lawton, Fort Sill. I generally stay on the interstate though, don't really go into town a whole lot because I live like right on i-44, 80 miles straight, 1 turn onto i40 and you're at the arena. But I do some, especially on weekends.

Obviously, it's all subjective. OKC is right there and not nearly as podunk as people who have never been here would have you believe. Ask me something in particular and I'm sure I can help you out.
How is the Norman-Oklahoma City area compared to Dallas, Fort Worth(current location), or even Houston in this case?
Food, Shopping(this is NT of course), entertainment, even winter weather?

Of course ill be mainly on the OU campus if i choose to attend there, but there's always a need for a break from school. Aside from Sooner, Thunder games and parties what is there to do?

If you did your job in high school, you should have no problem getting in.

I thought UH was like a 5 minute drive from the Galleria? which is in a fairly decent area am i right?

How did you feel about your 4 years there? what kinda life did you live while there?
Basically how i see it
OU-
Traditional college experience
College town
big time sports program
better parties
great place to build connections(as opposed to UH)
better education, school rep

UH-
Big city(which is somewhere i want to live after college, preferably dallas)
it would be easier to continue on how i currently live in houston
less
potentially less fun
instate tuition, a full 10,000 less per year than i would be paying at OU

basically
decent school with a big city backdrop
and great school with a small town backdrop

1. Latinas
2. asian(phillipino, asian, corean)
2. Brunette white girls
4. light skinned black girls

I would think OU college campus and environment > Houston, simply for the fact that it's a BigXII power house. 4 years of consistent fun and excitement. OU football games are ridiculous when it comes to environment.

OKC's alright, it's pretty alright in a good way. Thunder's nice. Bricktown is nice. Midwestern blues/rock is nice.
Also, OKC is starting to be considered one of the nicer places to retire because of the growing city life and cheaper cost of living. I'll probably try to keep a sublet out there in a bout 5 years or so.

Go to OU. I went to a metropolitan commuter school similar to U of H. You don't get a real college experience.

However unless you got a scholarship or your parents are cashing you out it probably isn't worth to go to OU if you taking the financial aid route.

I actually like Edmond and Norman better than OKC probably.

As far as food, I don't have a refined or adventurous pallet so I couldn't even tell you. There's plenty of "nice" restaurants certainly, but I'm a Ryan's, Golden Corral, Chinese Buffet, Sonic, Dairy Queen, chain restaurants type of dude. I'm sure you'd meet some people in college who can tell you about some snooty sushi joints or whatever if that's what you are in to.

Entertainment, %%%@@%@@ of Native American casinos if you like that (also the hookup for tobacco and alcohol). We don't get the concerts a Dallas or Houston does unfortunately, but Dallas is only a 3hr drive and you can fly there for under 100$ like if you just need to spend a weekend. I used to do it all the time but haven't lately, from Lawton to Dallas r/t I paid like 102$ one time, went to a Mavs game and the Nike outlet, some other stores and malls, came back Sunday and went to work Monday. Bricktown, which is where the Thunder arena (Ford center) is is fun, has some restaurants, bowling alleys, a ball park, things like that you'd expect a typical downtown to have.

If you're into night life, there's all types of different places people go and Tinker AFB is right there so anytime you have military around that equals $%+%$#% from all over. If you are into that, the easiest way to find out the most grimy spots, ask anybody in the service the places they are banned from going to. It happens all the time, there's literally a list of places soldiers can't go and party. Also, there's an HBCU (Langston) not far, so there's definitely always something going on in terms of urban culture.

There's Frontier City theme park and the water park across the street open in the summer, the zoo, if you're into culture Native American museums and exhibits everywhere, umm again it's so subjective it all depends largely on what you're into.

Somebody mentioned football, HUGE football state, HUGE. I mean high school footballs games are actually as big of a deal as Thunder games, bigger really. I imagine you would have no time finding a part time job, all kinds of malls and retail stores everywhere and an underrated job is toll collector on the interstate.

I don't really see tons of Latinas though I'll admit, outside of the Mexican parts of town but like Dominicans and Cubans, not an abundance. Assuming you're like everyone else here and love some "bunnies," well all day. There's some hood parts, but it's not really anywhere in the whole city you really are going to feel unsafe IMO. Cost of living is great, especially if you don't mind a room mate. They have tons of those types of apartment deals where you pay like your $325 a month and have 2 or 3 roommates, or if you have to get something your own you'll probably pay $500. If you decide to stay and buy a house afterwards, you could get a custom built 2000 sq ft for around 180k-220k with like an acre.

Sorry I couldn't be more of a help. If you can't tell I'm a real introvert. I got friends up there I could put you on with though.

actually you were alot of help, thank you. mind me asking how the winter weather is? in the dfw theres usually 1 or 2 days where we get ice or sleet, but thats about it.   im starting to lean more towards OU now, now that i think about it, most of the times i go out is because my girl or friends want to go

i think ill be satisfied with the partys and athletics OU has to offer, if i get bored the rest of what you mentioned will do.

Weather is VERY erractic in Oklahoma and commonly extreme. I think we might be 1 of the few states that has Earthquakes (albeit small ones), Tornadoes, blizzards, and floods.

There was a flash flood in OKC earlier where literally they were rescuing people in boats and a few people got washed away in their vehicles, yet it was sunny in Lawton which is again less than 100 miles away. I turned on the news like
embarassed.gif
But then by the afternoon it was all gone and back sunny outside. You'll see that a lot, weird changes and combos in weather.

This winter was one of the worst I remember in a long time. We had really chippy cold mornings (although we don't get below 0 or anything like that but it'll be like 25 in the morning) then it'd warm up by the evening time. Summers are od hot though, Houston is going to be the same or even worst because their humidity as well though. It'll be in the 100-110s, you get in your car and everything is scalding hot like the steering wheel, the shift knob, the metal buckle on your seatbelt, so it burns you when you touch it and you break a sweat just walking from the air conditioned car to the air conditioned building.

Great thing about snow days though, down here (and I'd assume Houston to be the same way) though is we ain't bout that life. The minute the weather man starts forecasting snow, everything shuts down just at the threat of it. I probably missed 4 or 5 days of work because of it this yr, still paid though.

People who aren't from around here get real scared of thunder storms and tornadoes though
laugh.gif
It's nothing usually. Only every once in a while does it really tear up some &#%$ and those houses were poorly built and topographically vulnerable.

This.  Like someone said earlier, UH is a commuter school.  The majority of the students don't even live on campus which is why parking is always a @!$!+ especially if you have a afternoon class

I'm pretty well versed on Houston as a city, I went to UHD but had many friends at UH Main and they all liked it. Maybe tell us what are you hoping to get out of your college experience and maybe we can give you a more pertinent answer or recommendation.

Dont go to Houston. Its a commuter school with bad athletics. Houston the city might be better than Norman, but you will have more fun and get a better education at Oklahoma. I dont know anyone that would choose Houston over OU.

I'd go to OU if given the opportunity and I graduated from UH

I'm new in the city, got into UHD but I was thinking about UH Main because of my major (Comm.) People also have been telling me it will be easier on my pockets. I'm going to be an out of state student though, so I'm screwed either way.  Let's hang out though

And best hands in the game, I'd say go to OU just to get out of TX, but if you decide to go to UH you already know

I went to school in Oklahoma but I'm born and raised in Houston. Any school you go to in Oklahoma is like living in a bubble. The Thunder are the only entertainment you have along with two clubs lmao. Oklahoma is a very nice place to retire, its not for younthful tho

seriously considering going to UH as well.

Anybody go to UTSA tho? How's that school?

Someone that doesn't want to or can afford to pay more than twice the cost for tuition.

Let's not act like OU is Princeton.

Like I said if money is no object I would go to OU but the quality of education increase isn't worth the monetary increase in going to OU over U of H for someone from Texas.

University of Texas was my number 1 choice to go with my best friend
pimp.gif
. but my resume wasnt strong enough to get me in.  Grades were ok.
so now i have UH or OU to fall back on as my 2nd and 3rd choices.  Texas State would be my 4th choice but the education there isnt really on par with OU or even UH i think.

But now dudes coming in this thread saying UH is more of a commuter school much like UTA here. which is what i dont want.

OU is looking better each day. im just afraid i wont meet any cool people there

was it OU? yea thats kinda what im not feelin to much about being "bubbled" in. but even now, I cant say i go to dallas and do stuff there. mostly just here around the TCU area doing my thing hanging out with friends.  after 4 years im probably out of oklahoma unless i happen to find a job there.

If youre considering UTSA, you might as well step it up and go to Texas State at san marcos. way better just be stepping on campus.  UTSA was too small for my liking, it felt like my local community college as soon as i go to UTSA.  I can see why someone would want to go there, its just class and nothing more. in and out every time.
